Essential Information

Students in Delaware have a range of programs from which to choose in engineering technology, all of which lead to associate's degrees. Students may specialize in subfields and must complete general education classes in addition to core engineering coursework. These associate's degrees are designed to allow graduates to transfer credits to a bachelor's degree program. Hands-on work is offered by some programs, in addition to didactic instruction.

While the state has 19 colleges within its boundaries, Delaware Technical Community College (DTCC) offers engineering technology programs. These programs, which cover a variety of disciplines, are available at three DTCC campuses.

Delaware Technical Community College - Owens

Students at this campus in Georgetown can find a variety of engineering technology associate's degree programs, including architectural engineering technology, environmental engineering technology and civil engineering technology. The architectural engineering and civil engineering programs are accredited by the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission of ABET.

The civil engineering technology program covers civil drafting and design, hydrology, route surveying and site development, while the environmental engineering technology program includes courses in geology, water/wastewater design and environmental sustainability. Students in the architectural engineering technology program can expect to learn about architectural drafting, solid modeling and AutoCAD. All of these programs can be completed in four semesters and also teach students about basic math and science principles. The environmental engineering program is also designed so students can transfer to a bachelor's program upon completion.

Delaware Technical Community College - Stanton

This campus in Stanton offers the greatest number of engineering technology programs out of the three campuses, with a total of seven programs available. The electronics, mechanical, computer and instrumentation engineering technology programs are all accredited by ABET. The instrumentation engineering technology program prepares students to work in a variety of industries, such as food processing, energy production, chemical processing and petrochemical production. Coursework covers electricity, logic controllers, computer assembly, programming and electronics.

Students in the mechanical engineering technology program complete courses in fluid power, machine design and electromechanical systems in addition to an engineering project. Students who complete the electrical or environmental engineering technology programs can transfer to a four-year school through the Connected Degree Program, which allows students to apply for dual admission at Delaware Technical Community College and one of two partner schools.

Delaware Technical Community College - Terry

This campus is located in Dover and offers architectural engineering technology and electronics engineering technology associate's programs. Neither of these programs are accredited by ABET. The electronics engineering technology program includes a mix of hands-on and classroom learning. Some of the courses that students may take include circuit analysis, digital electronics, microprocessors and analog electronics. The coursework for the each of these programs is slightly different from what students can expect at the other campuses.

Career Requirements

Engineering technicians typically need an associate's degree in engineering technology, and engineering technologists typically need a bachelor's degree in engineering technology. Engineering technicians usually focus on a particular engineering specialty, and they build, set up and test designs created by engineers.
