Students looking to study the English language and literature or improve their writing skills can turn to several schools in the Miami area. The three colleges discussed here are all located within 15 miles or less of city center. - Located about seven miles from central Miami, the University of Miami offers English majors the opportunity to earn a bachelor's degree, master's degree and doctorates in the field.
- A bachelor's degree can be pursued at Barry University, a Roman Catholic institution that's around nine miles from downtown Miami.
- A bachelor's degree and several different master's degrees are available for English students at Florida International University, which is located around 13 miles from Miami's downtown area.

University of Miami
Faculty members in the Department of English focus on a variety of areas, including creative writing, Romantic and Victorian periods, Jewish literature and cultural studies; several faculty members have published works of fiction and literary analysis. The department also has a writing center, which can provide assistance to students with writing assignments.
English Literature Bachelor's Degree
The University of Miami offers a 30-credit English literature major. Students choose courses from a wide list of electives, including those from certain periods of history. An honors option is also available to students with a 3.3 or higher overall GPA and a 3.5 or higher major GPA, which then requires 36 credits in all. Several other requirements have to be fulfilled for the honors distinction, like recommendations from the English department and completion of a thesis and several upper-division courses.
Master of Fine Arts in Fiction and Poetry
This master's degree normally takes two years to complete, although the school has recently added a third pilot year. Out of the 36 credit hours for the program, 18 credit hours are spent on the writing requirement, which includes thesis work and workshop classes. A teaching practicum and assistantship are also available to students. At the end of the program, students are expected to have created a literary work that is the length of a book and of publishing quality.
Ph.D. in English
There are numerous concentrations to pick from for the Ph.D. program in literature. Students can study areas of American or British literature ranging from the beginning of literature in those countries to more modern periods. Gender and feminist theory, Caribbean literature and ethnic and postcolonial studies are additional specialization options. Graduate assistantships with stipends and full tuition are available to students under certain circumstances.
Barry's Department of English and Foreign Languages houses the bachelor's program in English and offers internship options for senior-level students.
Bachelor of Arts in English
The coursework for this degree program covers issues like the novel, world literary masterpieces, major American writers, advanced composition, poetry writing, fiction writing and professional editing. Special topics courses in English are determined by the faculty members each semester. As part of this program, students learn how to create professional resumes and submit query letters. Students can pursue a literature, humanities, or professional writing specialization through choices of electives.
Florida International University
The Department of English at this university offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees in areas including literature, rhetoric and creative writing. An annual conference for writers is held on campus.
Bachelor of Arts in English
A linguistics or other similar course is a prerequisite for admission to this bachelor's degree program in English. Students complete 12 credits of a common core and then choose among four tracks: literature, writing/rhetoric, creative writing, or linguistics. Upper division courses are required in each track.
Master of Arts in Literature
Scholarly techniques are one of the main focuses for the Master of Arts in Literature program. Students are encouraged to pursue personal and professional educational interests and goals in this 30-credit program. After completing the necessary classes, students have to write a master's thesis. This assignment is generally 50 to 100 pages in length and the finished work is expected to contribute to a specific area of the English discipline. Students first create a proposal for the thesis and receive approval for it before creating the final thesis and defending it to a committee.
Master of Arts in Linguistics
To earn this degree, students need to complete 36 graduate hours of classes. The required courses for the program cover semantics, syntax, phonetics, phonology and an introduction to linguistics. For electives, students pick several classes from the history category and the structures category. These can include studying morphology, languages of the world, history of English and historical and comparative linguistics.
Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing
In this program, students spend 15 credit hours on literature, 3 credit hours on theory and form, 18 credit hours on a writing workshop and 6 credit hours on the program's thesis. This all contributes to the required 48 credit hours for the program. The various workshops available at the graduate level cover the following topics: poetry, narrative structure and revision, creative nonfiction, screenwriting, the novel and short fiction.
Saint Thomas University has a Bachelor of Arts in English degree program available, while Florida Memorial University also has a bachelor's degree program in English. Both schools are located around 11 miles from downtown Miami.
