Connecticut adult education centers, located in or near such populous areas as Middletown and Bridgeport, provide adult learners with the opportunity to take individual classes or certificate programs that can help them fully develop a personal interest or build professional skills. Learning how to manage finances, improve fitness levels, earn a GED or become a professional bartender are examples of the program diversity offered by these centers. Some studies are designed to help students prepare for professional certification in their chosen fields. Hamden Adult Education's Evening Programs

Hamden Adult Education, established by the Hamden Board of Education and approved by the state of Connecticut, provides academic programs and enrichment classes for students of all ages. Many campus-based classes are offered during the evenings, while a range of online courses allow for additional scheduling flexibility.

Adult High School Program

Adults lacking a complete high school education have the opportunity to finish their diploma through this evening-only program. Classes cover English, math, science and social studies.

General Educational Development (GED) Program

Students may take evening courses to prepare for the GED test. The program works on skills in the arts, math, literature, science, writing and social studies. Practice tests are included in the curriculum.

Computer Classes

Beginner and intermediate courses are offered in several popular computer applications, including Microsoft Word. Classes on Apple handheld products are also available.

Cooking Classes

Culinary arts classes teach bread making and cake decorating. Students can also explore a specific genre of cooking, such as pressure cooker usage, or take a course on global foods.

Creative Arts Classes

Artistic personal enrichment courses include topics such as ceramics, paper crafts, jewelry making or flower arranging. Most classes are offered during the evening.

Middletown Adult Education's Evening Programs

Middletown Adult Education is administered by the Middletown Board of Education in cooperation with other CT Boards of Education. Programs are designed to help adult students learn basic workplace skills, earn a GED or participate in personal enrichment lessons. Most classes are offered in the evening. Programs and class offerings vary throughout the year.

English as a Second Language (ESL) Program

Evening ESL classes are available at several locations affiliated with Middletown Adult Education. Non-English-speaking residents receive training in listening, speaking, reading and writing. A citizenship program that fulfills INS (Immigration and Naturalization Services) requirements is also offered.

Professional Bartending Certification Program

This program teaches students to serve alcohol responsibly as well as how to mix cocktails. Those who complete the program receive Servers and Managers Alcohol Responsibility Training (SMART) certification and are qualified to serve alcohol in Connecticut.

Safe-Serve Food Handler's Certificate Training Program

Students in this program take the National Restaurant Association's Food Handler's Certification Exam. The class meets primarily during evening hours; however, some sessions may require weekend attendance.

Health and Fitness Courses

Health and fitness class availability varies. Health classes include presentations on focused subjects such as stroke prevention. Dance classes may be offered in lieu of workouts. For instance, the spring 2016 catalog lists classes in line dancing and zumba. It also contains a unique meditation course in the personal growth section.

Financial Management Courses

Courses on starting a business and retirement planning are designed to help individuals gain a better understanding of their personal financial matters.

Continuing Education Programs at Branford Hall Career Institute

Not all of Branford's programs are available at each location. In Connecticut, the Southington location offers the largest number and widest variety of programs. The programs listed below are for this site, so be sure to check programs per location.

Medical Programs

Two programs prepare students for work in a medical facility, although their work focus is very different. In the medical assistant program, students learn how to care for patients and follow clinical practices. The health claims specialist program trains students in another important task: ensuring that patients' health insurance can and will cover the medical procedures they need.

Massage Therapy Program

Massages are good for health too! Students in the massage therapy program learn both classical and therapeutic massage techniques. They also study the business and self-marketing involved in a career as a massage therapist.

Computer Network Management Program

For the technologically inclined, Branford offers a computer networking management program. Students learn how to properly utilize a variety of computer technology which companies rely upon, including different operating systems, networks, and software.

Paralegal program

Paralegals assist lawyers by drafting documents, researching related court cases, and organizing and filing paperwork. The paralegal program can help students find work in government offices, businesses, and law firms.

Throughout Connecticut, adults pursuing education have a considerable variety of schooling options. Besides obtaining a diploma or GED, they can also take courses in computing, cooking, and other means of professional development.
