Courses in event planning cover business events, weddings, special occasions, sports games, and other entertainment events. There aren't many certificate or degree programs specifically in event planning, but hospitality and tourism management degree programs have several related classes available that can provide ample training. Additionally, some continuing education and adult education courses cover different types of event planning. Internship opportunities are offered by at least two of the schools.

In South Carolina, there are five colleges and universities that offer coursework in event planning, and those programs are discussed below.


College of Charleston

The Charleston campus of this college has a hospitality and tourism management bachelor's degree program that offers two specific courses related to event planning. The first course, meetings and convention management, discusses the operations, practices and management techniques utilized in running conventions, meetings, events or exhibits. Students in this course gain vocational perspective on how professional event management teams operate. In the second course, events management, students learn about the history of events, including a cultural perspective of how certain events and traditions originated. This class also teaches students about event budget planning, communication strategies, security concerns, staffing methods, marketing tactics and event evaluation procedures.

Greenville Technical College

Located in Greenville, this college's continuing education program offers a course on wedding planning. Students in this 6-session program learn how to become wedding consultants or to start their own consulting agencies. Students will receive training in communicating with all parties involved, including the bride, groom, family members and the rest of the wedding party. Special topics in this course include self-marketing and advertising, legal and professional assistance, wedding customs and etiquette, networking with other wedding professionals, hiring wedding professionals and business planning for consultants. Although this course focuses specifically on wedding planning, some information may be universal to the event planning industry.

Midlands Technical College

Situated in Columbia, this college offers a continuing education course titled, Wow, What a Great Event! This event planning course can be completed in six weeks and teaches students about planning both small and large special events. Over the course of 12 lessons, instructors will provide training in such topics as themed events, decoration coordinating, location selection, space planning, food vendors, entertainment choices, funding, corporate sponsorship, staff development and event evaluation strategies. During the course, students will also gain access to professional event planning associations, as well as other event planning industry resources, such as vendor lists.

University of South Carolina - Beaufort

The Beaufort campus of this school offers several event planning-related courses in its hospitality management bachelor's degree program. Related courses include event promotion, meeting and conference planning, event sponsorship strategies, wedding planning, festival planning and event productions. Additional coursework within this degree program that may provide useful training for professionals in the event planning industry include food services, menu management, tourism, internal staff training and hospitality financial management. The degree program also has internship opportunities that could provide students with real-world training from experienced event planners.

University of South Carolina - Columbia

The sports and entertainment management bachelor's degree program at this university in Columbia includes a course in venue and events management. This course covers the history of events and venues and principles of event planning.
