Students interested in an executive assistant career may enroll in business office technology and administrative assistant programs. These programs are offered at 2-year colleges at the certificate and associate's degree levels. Credits may be transferable to a higher degree. Programs generally take between one and two years to complete. Students may also be able to complete an internship or co-op for credit.

Asnuntuck Community College
Asnuntuck Community College enrolls over 1,600 students and is located in Enfield, about 20 miles north of Hartford. Students can earn a 16-credit Office User Specialist Certificate, which prepares them for entry-level work or further education with coursework in computers, software, word processing, spreadsheets, databases and Web design.
Gateway Community College
With over 8,200 students, this New Haven college is one of the largest schools in Connecticut offering administrative assistant programs. Through its 30-credit Administrative Assistant Certificate program, students learn the basic clerical skills of writing, typing and transcription. The AS in Business Office Technology program has an administrative assistant option, which requires coursework in business administration, office skills and the liberal arts. Students in the associate degree program learn about word processing, typing, managing records and solving problems in a business setting.
Housatonic Community College
A variety of business office technology certificates and degrees can be earned at this Bridgeport-based college. The one-year Administrative Support Certificate program emphasizes receptionist duties and prepares students for entry-level office work. The AS in Business Office Technology program has an executive assistant option that teaches students about customer service, office skills, management and business procedures. Students in the two-year program develop the ability to solve problems and make decisions in an executive environment by taking courses in accounting, economics and management.
Manchester Community College
Located in Manchester, about 10 miles east of Hartford, Manchester Community College is another community college offering business support programs. The 30-credit Office Support Specialist Certificate program prepares students for entry-level administrative work with courses in business writing, procedures and applications. The AS in Business Office Technology with an administrative assistant option program has legal and medical options, but students seeking a career in executive assistance will benefit most from the office option. Coursework includes computer communications and applications, office procedures and basic clerical skills like typing. Students in the associate degree program may be able to substitute an internship or cooperative work experience for coursework.
Naugatuck Valley Community College
With around 7,100 students, this public college in Waterbury offers a certificate program in administrative support, which requires coursework in computer and management skills and the student's chosen area of focus: legal, accounting, technology or general business. Credits earned in the certificate program can be transferred towards a business associate degree program.
Three Rivers Community College
Three Rivers Community College is located in Norwich and offers a 24-credit Basic Business Skills Certificate through its business department. The program teaches students about business communications and the use of mathematics and computers for business.
Tunxis Community College
Tunxis Community College enrolls around 4,200 students and is located in Farmington, about 10 miles west of Hartford. The Business Office Technology Certificate program focuses on office applications and skills, such as typing, transcribing and business writing. Students can also pursue an associate degree in business office technology, which is designed to prepare them for administrative and executive assistant work. Courses include those required by the certificate program, along with additional courses in business law, ethics, administrative procedures and the liberal arts.
