Saint Edward's University

Saint Edward's University is affiliated with the Catholic Church and has partnerships with universities in ten countries. Students can gain experience working in settings such as non-profit agencies, hospitals, private practices and treatment centers. They can also participate in the Student Society for the Master of Arts in Counseling or the Marriage and Family Therapy Student Association.

Master of Arts in Counseling

The Master of Arts in Counseling has specializations designed to train students to become a licensed marriage and family therapist or licensed professional counselor. Through the licensed marriage and family therapist concentration, students study techniques in counseling children and teens, learn about marriage and family therapy techniques and complete several counseling practicums. Other courses include human growth and development, abnormal human behavior and counseling diverse populations. The practicums allow students to acquire supervised experience in their area of specialization.

Texas State University - San Marcos

Texas State University - San Marcos offers counseling programs through its College of Education, which also has an Institute for Play Therapy where students and faculty can conduct research, complete contact hours and encourage health in children. Students can also participate in Chi Sigma Iota, an international society for professional counselors.

Master of Arts in Professional Counseling

Through the Master of Arts in Professional Counseling, students can complete an emphasis in marital, couple and family counseling. The program is research-based and has an optional thesis. Through this option, students explore counseling and personality theories, theories in marital, couple and family counseling, treatment in marital, couple and family counseling, methods for counseling children and teens and community-based learning. The 60-hour program prepares students to become licensed marriage and family therapists and has field experience requirements.
