Individuals wanting to learn fashion design in South Carolina can find two schools offering relevant education in the field. Much of students' class time is dedicated to the hands-on development of skills, including the construction of garments. Degree-seeking students will need to complete an internship and present at an exhibition.
Bob Jones University
This Greenville-based school offers a bachelor's program in apparel, textiles and design. Program majors learn about the retail business and fashion design. The curriculum includes several clothing design and construction courses as well as training in fashion drawing, pattern-making and fashion merchandising. Students complete an internship during their fourth year and compile a professional portfolio that highlights their fashion designs by the end of the program. Students may also feature their original designs in a school exhibition. In addition to working as clothing designers, graduates may also become alterations specialists, fashion consultants or fashion writers.
Spartanburg Community College
Located in Spartanburg, SCC offers five continuing education courses in sewing. These classes are designed for community members looking to learn how to sew or develop their skills, which can be beneficial for individuals who are interested in fashion design. In the Sewing Basics course, students choose a sewing project, such as a piece of clothing, to complete over the course of the program. For more experienced students, the Sewing Intermediate course offers instruction in working with different fabrics, like knit and napped fabrics, and adding buttonholes and zippers to their projects. SCC also provides specific introductory courses in hemming and zippers, as well as one in sewing knits without a Serger sewing machine.
