Essential Information

Finance programs can prepare students for a variety of positions in the banking and financial industries. Many professionals in these fields, such as financial analysts and financial managers, need at least a bachelor's degree in finance or a related field; students in Delaware may choose from bachelor's and master's degree programs in the field. Some schools offer graduate degrees that may be earned on a fast-track in as little as 12 months; others may take three years to complete. At least one school offers an MBA that can be completed mostly online. Students may have the opportunity to intern as part of their studies.

Delaware students can find four not-for-profit schools that offer programs in finance. Read on for more information about these schools and the programs they offer.

Delaware State University

This Dover university offers a business administration program with a concentration in finance and banking. Locations that graduates could work at include banks, investment companies, government agencies and mortgage companies. The program begins with core business courses, such as microeconomics, accounting, statistics and business law. The finance and banking curriculum consists of 18 credits and requires students to complete courses in investments, bank management and financial markets. Students must also select two elective courses; options include international finance management, security analysis, risk management and new venture finance.

Goldey-Beacom College

Students in the area of Wilmington can pursue undergraduate and graduate degree programs in finance at Goldey-Beacom College. The Bachelor of Science in Finance program requires 127 to 130 credits of coursework. Students can expect to take courses in applied business statistics, money and banking, business ethics, advanced business statistics, investment and portfolio management and equity and fixed income securities.

At the graduate level, students can pick from Master of Science in Finance or Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Finance degree programs. Both of these programs require 36 credits to graduate. Students in both programs can expect to take courses in corporate finance, risk analysis and management, quantitative foundations and business applications and managerial economics. The master's program allows students to choose nine credits of electives, while the MBA program features a rigid curriculum and does not include elective options.

University of Delaware

Students at the University of Delaware in Newark can pursue a Bachelor of Science in Finance as well as a Master of Science in Finance. The first half of the bachelor's degree program provides students with a foundation in liberal arts and general education, while the second portion of the program focuses on the finance major requirements. Required courses cover topics like investments, banking and monetary policy, corporate governance, real estate finance and financial institutions.

The Master of Science in Finance degree can be pursued as a standalone program or as a dual degree program that also includes a Master of Business Administration degree. The accelerated standalone program option allows students to earn the graduate degree in only 12 months, while the standard option takes 18 months to complete. The master's program requires the completion of 30 credits of coursework, and students may have elective options in monetary economics, corporate governance, international financial management and econometrics.

Wilmington University

Found in New Castle, Wilmington University offers a few undergraduate and graduate degrees for finance students to choose from. The Bachelor of Science in Finance can be pursued alone or in combination with an accounting program. For undergraduate students who plan to major in another field, a minor option in finance is also available. Some of the undergraduate finance courses include financial planning, accounting, corporate finance and financial management.

The Certificate of Advanced Study in Finance program is designed for graduate students and requires five finance courses. Students in the certificate program can pick from a list of finance courses, which are also found in the finance concentration within the Master of Business Administration degree program. Course options include portfolio theory, derivatives, corporate taxation, advanced financial analysis, investments and international finance. The core courses required for the MBA are available online, but all of the graduate finance courses are only offered at the campus.
