Essential Information

Finance studies can be found at multiple levels up to doctoral, and all of the universities profiled below feature bachelor's programs in the field. Some universities also offer Master of Business Administration (MBA) programs with a specialization in finance or Master of Science programs in finance. An internship, capstone course, senior thesis or dissertation may be required of graduating students.

Fairleigh Dickinson University - Metropolitan Campus

Located in Teaneck, this university has a minor, Bachelor of Science (BS), MBA and graduate certificate in finance. Bachelor's degree students take international business finance, financial markets and analytical methods in finance. Students who are pursuing a business degree in another field can pursue the finance minor, which requires four courses. The graduate program is meant for MBA degree holders who want to update their education on financial planning and investments. The MBA program has a finance specialization, and students take a course in capital markets theory and two finance electives in addition to the core requirements.

Kean University

Found in Union, this university offers a BS in Finance program that can prepare students to pursue graduate studies or find employment in the corporate and public sectors. Students take courses in business law, corporate finance, marketing investments and financial institutions. A capstone course in integrative business strategy is also required.

New Jersey City University

Located in Jersey City, this university provides a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA), Master of Science (MS) and graduate certificates in finance. BSBA students study managerial finance, banking and portfolio analysis. The MS program has specializations in financial analysis, financial planning and financial management, and each one can prepare students to take particular certification exams. Four types of graduate certificates in finance are available: financial planning, investment analysis, portfolio management and financial management. Each certificate program requires from 15-18 credits, and all of the options except financial management are intended to prepare students to pursue a certification. MBA students can specialize in finance, and they study areas like global finance and financial institutions.

Princeton University

This university is in Princeton, and it grants an undergraduate certificate in finance. The program has tracks in mathematical finance, corporate finance, derivatives pricing/risk management, investment management and information technologies for finance. Certificate students must take finance courses and complete a senior thesis. The certificate program can be attained by students who are pursuing a degree in any department. The Master in Finance program is intended for students who have a background in math, and it focuses on economic analysis, computer science and mathematics. Graduate students must complete an internship in addition to five core courses and 10 electives.

Rider University

Located in Lawrenceville, this university offers a BSBA in Finance. Students take courses in financial markets, intermediate corporate finance and investments. The school also allows eligible students to pursue a dual degree program that results in a BSBA and MBA in less time than it would take to complete the programs separately. The MBA program has a specialization in finance, which includes course options in financial market operations, financial modeling and portfolio management.

Rutgers University - Camden

Found in Camden, this university provides a minor and a BS in Finance. Undergraduate students study global financial markets, fixed income securities and multinational corporate finance. The program also includes options to participate in an internship or independent study experience. The MBA program has a concentration in finance, and students get to study finance theory, financial markets and portfolio management. The MBA program requires a total of 54 credits, although some foundation requirements can be waived if a student has taken equivalent coursework at the undergraduate level.

Rutgers University - New Brunswick

Located in New Brunswick, this university has a BS in Finance that covers investment analysis, corporate finance and financial management. The MBA program has an option in finance, and students study advanced financial management topics. The Master of Quantitative Finance program has courses in financial modeling and econometrics. The research-oriented finance PhD program requires students to participate in seminars and complete a dissertation.

Rutgers University - Newark

Found in Newark, this university shares the same business department as the New Brunswick campus of Rutgers University. This school also has a BS in Finance, and students take courses in investment analysis, business law and marketing. MBA finance students must complete 18 credits of concentration coursework, and they learn about investment analysis, financial management and financial institutions. Students who opt for the Master of Quantitative Finance program must complete 48 credit hours of coursework, which covers various finance topics, investments and object-oriented programming. The PhD in Finance program requires 72 credit hours, and students should be prepared to teach undergraduate courses.

Seton Hall University

This university is in South Orange and provides a BSBA in Finance and an MBA program with a finance specialization. Bachelor's degree students study a variety of topics, such as project budgeting, portfolio analysis, international finance and stock valuation. The school is home to the Center for Securities Trading and Analysis, which gives students a chance to feel what it's like to conduct business in a realistic environment. MBA students are required to participate in a service project in addition to breadth and concentration courses.

Thomas Edison State College

Located in Trenton, this college has a BSBA in Finance as well as an MBA program with a finance specialization. Students in the BSBA program must complete 120 credits of coursework, which covers investments, financial management and financial markets. All students must also complete a capstone course. The MBA program features courses in entrepreneurship, financial statement analysis and global finance.
