Essential Information

The University of Florida's College of Dentistry offers CODA-accredited dentistry degree and certificate programs in North Florida. Each of the programs discussed below is offered on the school's campus in Gainesville. However, the school offers other programs that are held on campuses located in South Florida. Many of the dental programs include clinical practicums in addition to classroom and lab-based coursework. Students must meet minimum admission requirements before entering upper-level programs.

Career Requirements

Dentists must be licensed by the Florida Board of Dentistry to practice in Florida. To earn licensure, an individual must graduate from a dental program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) of the American Dental Association and pass an exam.

The University of Florida

This school is located in Gainesville and enrolls about 50,000 students. It offers a Doctor of Dental Medicine degree program that requires four years of study. Coursework during the first two years of this program covers topics like pathology, physiology, biochemistry and dental anatomy. The final two years of the program include clinical experiences.

The school also offers a Certificate in Advanced Education in General Dentistry that requires 12 months of study. Students in this program gain extended knowledge of all of the dental disciplines.

A Master of Science or Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Materials Science and Engineering with a specialization in dental biomaterials is also available. Students in the master's degree program write a thesis, while those in the Ph.D. program write a dissertation.

Students may also earn a Master of Science in Dental Science with a specialization in endodontics and a Certificate in Endodontics. The curriculum of this 24-month dual degree and certificate program includes a project.

The school also offers a Doctor of Philosophy in Medical Sciences with a specialization in oral biology. Students in this program learn about subjects such as oral microbial physiology, host-pathogen interactions in oral disease and vaccine development.

A 3-year Certificate in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology program is also available. This program prepares graduates to take the certification examination offered by the American Board of Oral Pathology.

Also available is a certificate program in oral and maxillofacial radiology. This program requires 30 months of study in topics such as ultrasound techniques and nuclear medicine studies. Program graduates are eligible to take the certification exam offered by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology.

Students may also earn a Certificate in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery or a Doctor of Medicine and Certificate in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. The former program takes four years and the latter six years to complete. Instruction in either program covers topics like facial aesthetic surgery, orthognathic surgery and preprosthetic surgery.

A dual Master of Science in Dental Sciences with a specialization in orthodontics and Certificate in Orthodontics program is also available. This program, which takes 35 months to complete, includes instruction in connective tissues and tooth movement, advanced oral biology and orthodontic treatment.

The school also offers a Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry. This 24-month program includes coursework covering topics like pediatric dental medicine, radiology and orthodontics.

Additionally, the school offers a dual Certificate in Periodontics and a Master of Science in Dental Sciences with specialization in periodontics program. This program requires 36 months of study and teaches students how to treat diseases of the periodontium, correct soft tissue deficiencies and restore dental implants.

The college also offers a Master of Science in Dental Sciences with specialization in prosthodontics and a dual Master of Science in Dental Sciences with specialization in prosthodontics and a Certificate in Prosthodontics. Both programs require 36 months of study, but students in the former program complete a project while those in the latter write a thesis. Students in either program learn how to diagnose problems with and restore dental implants.

Numerous internships and fellowships are also available. Internships are available in fields such as pediatrics and orthodontics. Fellowships are offered in areas such as endodontics and periodontial and implant dentistry.
