There are more than 30 schools in Florida that offer programs in film production or a related area, such as multimedia or digital video production. Such programs lead to the award of a certificate, or an associate's, bachelor's, or master's degree. Within degree programs, concentrations are often available. Most programs provide students with the resources needed to build a portfolio and almost all require the production of a project or short film.
Below, programs from ten of the largest public and private non-profit schools are profiled.
Students interested in studying production in the Fort Lauderdale area can pursue a certificate or degree program in digital media at Broward College. The 15-credit certificate program covers video and audio editing, 3-D animation and multimedia authoring. Students in the degree program take a combination of general studies and digital media courses. Some of the requirements in this 64-credit program include 3-D animation, video editing, portfolio development, and an internship.
Florida State College at Jacksonville
Situated in the city of Jacksonville, this college is home to certificate and degree programs that could interest aspiring filmmakers. Students interested in a short program of study can pursue 12-15 credit technical certificates that cover production and post-production basics. Those seeking a more in-depth educational experience can seek an Associate in Science or a Bachelor of Applied science degree. The associate's program includes core and elective courses, such as digital imaging, computer animation, motion graphics, recording techniques, and advanced video production. Similar courses and an internship are part of the bachelor's program.
Florida State University
At this Tallahassee university, students interested in film can study at the College of Motion Picture Arts, which offers programs including a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) or a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Production, a BFA in Animation and Digital Arts and an MFA in Writing. Both production programs focus on providing hands-on production opportunities and allow students to work with visiting filmmakers. The programs conclude with the development of a thesis film.
Students in the animation and digital arts program can focus their studies on visual effects, motion-capture technologies, computer animation or green screen. This program is offered on a satellite campus in West Palm Beach. Students pursuing the MFA in Writing can develop screenwriting skills and may choose to spend a semester in London, England. This school is home to state-of-the-art facilities that include post-production studios, sound stages, a visual effects lab, mixing theaters and an instructional back lot.
Hillsborough Community College
This Tampa-based community college has a Media Arts Department that offers certificate and degree programs in production and post-production. Students can pursue certificates in several areas, including video production, broadcast production, multimedia production, and video editing. The school also has associate's programs in digital television and media production that cover such as areas as film and video careers, broadcasting, field production, authoring for multimedia and digital animation. In addition, two internships and a practicum are required. Students can also earn an associate's degree in digital media/ multimedia technology.
Miami Dade College
This school allows students to earn an Associate in Science in Film Production Technology and a Bachelor of Applied Science in Film, Television and Digital Production at its Miami location. The associate's program requires 64 credits. Students study screenwriting, several levels of film production, editing, business, and video composition. They also complete an internship.
To enter the bachelor's program, students must have completed 60 undergraduate credits or an associate's degree. This program covers ethics and research, sound design, broadcast design, digital cinematography, DVD authoring, business practices, fiction scriptwriting, film production, and studio TV production. The School of Entertainment and Design Technology provides access to video editing facilities and field audio recording equipment.
Palm Beach State College
This Lake Worth college has an Associate in Science in Motion Picture Production Technology program. Students attending on a full-time basis can complete this program in two years, while those enrolled on a part-time schedule can finish in three years. Coursework covers areas such as lighting and grip, film directing, cinematography, production design, editing basics, screenwriting, sound and motion picture production. Students also participate in an internship.
Seminole State College of Florida
At this Sanford college, students can earn an Associate of Science in Multimedia Technology Television and Digital Cinema Production. Film-related courses include television production fundamentals, electronic field production, video post-production, and advanced editing. Students can also earn credit for completing a cooperative education internship in radio or television. Graduates leave this program with a portfolio and experience using cameras, editing programs, and video graphics software.
University of Central Florida
Located in Orlando, this university has multiple film programs, including a Bachelor of Arts in Cinema Studies, a BFA in Film and an MFA in Entrepreneurial Digital Cinema. The cinema studies bachelor's program focuses on film theory, history, and criticism, while the BFA covers the film production process. Students in the BFA program complete a short film or screenplay during their senior year. The MFA is a three-year program that centers on film production. Students produce and market a low-budget feature film to complete the program. Available facilities and resources include Adobe and Final Cut Pro software, production space, lighting grids, editing suites, a color-correction suite, and telecine equipment.
University of Miami
This Coral Gables school offers a Bachelor of Science in Communication program with a major in motion pictures and a Master of Fine Arts program in motion pictures. Undergraduates can concentrate their studies in general motion pictures, critical studies, production, business or screenwriting. Students in all concentrations take core courses that include motion pictures survey, screenwriting basics, fundamentals of digital production and international cinema history. MFA students can specialize in interactive media creation, directing, producing, non-fiction, editing, cinematography, screenwriting or sound.
At this Orlando school, students can earn an Associate in Science in Film Production Technology. This program can prepare graduates for entry-level film positions or for transfer into a bachelor's program. Coursework covers film editing, camera techniques, grip, sound, lighting, and cinematography. This school also offers a 24-credit technical certificate in film production fundamentals that includes an internship.
