Essential Information

Teaching programs are available at the undergraduate and graduate levels in fields such as elementary education, educational technology, secondary education and the history of education. Bachelor's and master's programs in elementary and secondary education prepare graduates to become licensed teachers. Secondary education programs commonly are in a specialized area, like English education, science education or mathematics education and prepare the graduate for certification in the chosen subject area. Students enrolled in teaching programs often observe teachers in local classrooms and get experience teaching students during a period of student teaching.

Florida State University

Florida State University is the flagship university of the State University System of Florida and is located in Tallahassee. This school's College of Education offers a variety of traditional classroom teaching programs, as well as four online educational programs.

The school's early childhood development prepares students to teach pre-kindergarten through third grade children. While the elementary education bachelor's degree program gives students an opportunity to become certified in Florida to teach Kindergarten through sixth grade. Students take classes on human development, early literacy learning, mathematics and language principles for teachers.

Students in the social science education bachelor's program are trained to teach grades 6-12 history and science. They observe teachers and complete courses in organization and control in education, schooling and developing in third world societies, schooling in American society and introduction to education.

Those interested in teaching secondary students can choose a bachelor's degree in mathematics and science (FSU-Teach) or English education. The mathematics program's curriculum includes classes in how adolescents learn mathematics, using history in teaching mathematics, student teaching in mathematics, teaching high school mathematics and using technology in the teaching of mathematics. The English education program includes classroom observations, opportunities to tutor at-risk students and a semester-long internship in which students plan and present lesson plans to middle and high school classes.

University of Florida

Located in Gainesville, Florida, the University of Florida's School of Teaching and Learning has an enrollment of almost 1,900 students and offers 20 different bachelor's and advanced degree programs in the teaching field. Students can choose between Master of Education (MEd) programs in educational technology, science education and mathematics education or pursue a master's in English education.

The educational technology program is held online and specializes in teacher education, media literacy, production of educational technologies and instructional design. It focuses on using technology to redefine the way individuals learn and teach, and students get opportunities to research and practice what they learn.

The teacher preparation programs are designed for those interested in teaching grades 6-12 and incorporate student teaching. Those in the English education program take courses that provide a broad view of critical perspectives in literary movements and mix in a careful and deep study of texts, while those in the science education program take courses in effective teaching and classroom management, methods and assessment, global studies methods and science instruction in informal settings. The mathematics education program includes classes in mathematical problem solving, secondary math methods and effective teaching.
