Prepare for the GED in Spanish

What is the GED?

The GED stands for General Educational Development. It tests academic competency in math, science, social studies and language arts. In order to pass the exam there is a required score of 145 for each of the four subjects, making the total minimum score of 580.

While the test is developed and standardized by the American Council on Education (ACE), it is administered by state educational systems. It should also be noted that a GED is not the same thing as a high school diploma. The test cannot be taken online; it can only be taken at an official testing center.

In order to be eligible to take the GED exam you cannot be enrolled in or have graduated from high school. The person taking the exam needs to be at least 16 years old and needs to meet certain state guidelines. There are different specific state, provincial, or territorial requirements regarding age, residency, and the length of time since leaving school.

About the Spanish GED Test

The Spanish version of the GED exam was originally developed for GED candidates in Puerto Rico, but it has since been authorized for use throughout the United States. The writing portions of the test are graded by test evaluators who speak Spanish as a first language or by people who have college-level teaching experience in Spanish. Those interested in taking the GED in Spanish may also be required to take an English as a Second Language (ESL) test. Candidates should contact local testing centers to see if tests are offered in Spanish.

Spanish Test Preparation

Test takers sitting for the GED exam in Spanish should contact a local testing center to see if prep classes are also available in Spanish; many times they are. Lots of times, centers that provide preparation classes for the GED also provide assistance and preparation for the ESL exam. Classes are usually taught by native Spanish speakers.

There are also plenty of resources available for Spanish speakers to use to prepare for the GED on their own. For example, Steck-Vaughn, one of three companies offering testing materials that are reviewed and certified by the GED Testing Service, offers preparation materials in Spanish. These materials include online practice tests in Spanish, Spanish editions of GED preparation books and complete Spanish preparation courses.
