Georgia Homeland Security Colleges with Degree Program Overviews

Essential Information

Students interested in homeland security can find classes on the topic in criminal justice degree programs, and some colleges offer degrees in homeland security and emergency management. In Georgia, students can choose between seven non-profit colleges that offer degree programs relevant to homeland security. These programs lead to the award of certificates and associate's degrees, although at least one master's degree program is also offered. Some programs are available online. The master's degree and some of the certificate programs require that applicants hold bachelor's degrees prior to admission.


Armstrong Atlantic State University

Armstrong Atlantic State University is located in the city of Savannah. The four-year college offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs and certificates to its more than 7,000 enrolled students. Armstrong Atlantic students who have an interest in homeland security will want to explore the school's Cyber Crime Certificate program offered through the criminal justice, social and political science departments. This graduate program is offered online and is primarily designed for professionals already working in the law enforcement field. This 18-credit program is unique to the region.

Darton State College

Located in the city of Albany, this two-year school has a student population of close to 6,100. Darton students who are interested in homeland security can enroll in the college's Homeland Security Certificate program in the social sciences department. The 30-credit certificate program includes classes in terrorism and homeland security, immigration threats and protecting critical infrastructure. Elective courses include protection of hazardous materials, theories of terrorism and current world problems. This program is designed to be completed in five semesters.

Georgia Military College

Georgia Military College is located in the town of Milledgeville. Students can earn an Associate of Arts or an Associate of Science in Homeland Security and Emergency Management. Both programs require a combination of general education courses and major courses. The Associate of Science degree requires a total of at least 90 credits to complete, while the Associate of Arts requires a minimum of 94 credits. Within the program, students explore the history of homeland security and terror, including the roots of modern terrorism.

Georgia Perimeter College

Georgia Perimeter College is located in the city of Decatur. The Associate of Arts in Homeland Security and Emergency Management program includes a required homeland security and emergency management and human geography course. In addition to these required courses, students in the homeland security degree program at Georgia Perimeter College select up to three elective courses. These electives, which are related to the homeland security field, include instruction in anthropology, computer science, economics, incident command, psychology, political science and emergency rescue. Students also take classes in English composition, algebra and calculus.

Georgia Piedmont Technical College

The Clarkston-based, Georgia Piedmont Technical College offers associate's degree and certificate programs. Homeland security students will be interested in the college's Associate of Applied Science in Criminal Justice Technology. The 60-credit criminal justice technology degree offers specializations in criminal justice administration, crime scene or public safety. Students who choose the public safety specialization will study homeland security, report writing and criminal investigation, in addition to general studies and technical classes. The program also includes a criminal justice practicum or internship.

Augusta University

Georgia Regents University is located in the city of Augusta. The public university offers more than 100 degree programs and enrolls over 9,000 students. The school offers a Master of Public Administration program with a track in criminal justice. Public administration students study constitutional law, research methods in public administration and public policy analysis. Criminal justice coursework includes emergency management, homeland security, info security management or unconventional threats. Students will also complete a capstone project paper demonstrating their knowledge of applied public administration practices.

Savannah State University

Savannah State University is a four-year public school located in the city of Savannah, with a student enrollment of more than 4,000. At Savannah State's Department of Political Science and Public Affairs, students can enroll in the Bachelor of Art in Homeland Security and Emergency Management program. The 125-credit bachelor's program explores homeland security and emergency management politics and policy, modern terrorism and emergency planning. Homeland security students will also complete an internship. The university offers a minor in homeland security and emergency management.
