Essential Information

In Hawaii, the University of Hawaii at Manoa is the only university to offer architecture programs leading to a bachelor's degree, doctoral degree and global dual degree. While bachelor's degrees may be earned in four years, the doctorate program can take seven years to complete. Laboratory and research time are highlighted in the doctoral degree program, as is the need for practicum experience. Students may choose to study abroad. Only the doctoral degree can prepare students for licensure in architecture.

University of Hawaii at Manoa

Architecture programs are available through the School of Architecture at the University of Hawaii at Manoa in Honolulu. The school offers a Bachelor of Environmental Design, a Doctorate of Architecture and a dual degree global track. The 120-credit Bachelor of Environmental Design program offers a pre-professional design track that includes coursework in architecture, art, civil engineering and sociology.

The seven-year doctoral degree program requires students to earn 126 undergraduate credits and 90 graduate credits, as well as allowing students to research a particular area of interest. The program includes professional studio courses, as well as a practicum that incorporates scholarly research activity and professional practice. The program is accredited by the NAAB and meets the requirements for the Architectural Registration Exam, once students have completed the IDP.

Several study abroad options are available for architecture students who want to spend a term or semester learning in China, Thailand or Singapore. The school offers several laboratories, like the Environment Research Design Laboratory and the Community Design Center. Students also have access to the Haigo and Irene Shen Architecture Gallery.

Career Requirements

In order to become an architect in Hawaii, a state license is needed. As a requirement for this license, students have to graduate from a National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB)-accredited bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree, complete the Intern Development Program (IDP) and pass the Architect Registration Exam. Architects are also required to meet 16 continuing education hours every two years.

The University of Hawaii at Manoa's doctorate program has received accreditation from the NAAB.
