Hawaii students interested in game design only have a few options in the region. Located in Hilo, this public institution offers a Certificate of Competence in Digital Media Arts. All students must complete courses in digital imaging, small business management and motion studio image. Students who want to learn game design skills can choose an elective course from a variety of options, such as digital animation, graphic design, motion graphic design and computer graphics. At the end of the program, students can choose between an internship and practicum, which can give them professional experience in digital media arts.
Leeward Community College
Students can enroll at this community college in Pearl City to earn a Creative Media Academic Subject Certificate. This program prepares students for bachelor's degree programs in animation, computer games and interactive media. As part of the program, students can specialize in either design and illustration or interactive media. Courses cover drawing, computer graphics, digital animation and computer science. Students finish the program by building a portfolio of their creative media projects.
University of Hawaii at Manoa
Students who enroll at this Honolulu university can earn a Bachelor of Arts in Creative Media. Within the program, students can choose from three tracks that include digital cinema, computer animation and critical studies. All students take courses in character animation, screenwriting, aesthetics, research and film theory. Students also have the opportunity to take part in creative media internships. The computer animation option includes a variety of courses that may be of interest to game designers, including character animation, visual effects, narrative game design and scene design.
