Tennessee students can find a variety of entry-level health care programs at 2-year colleges and technical schools that result in a certificate, associate's degree or diploma. These occupational programs prepare students to work in such fields as dietary management, nursing assisting, practical nursing, emergency medical technology, physical therapy assisting, medical assisting or occupational therapy assisting. These health care programs may be found in on-campus and online formats, though online programs may require some on-site practical training that may be done at a medical facility or other care facility.
Roane State Community College
Roane State Community College has nine campuses in Tennessee, including one in Harriman. The college offers a number of accredited health care programs to individuals who wish to pursue careers in areas like medical assisting, emergency medical technology or nursing.
The 3-semester emergency medical technician certificate program prepares students for careers as paramedics. Students must complete 47 total hours of paramedic and clinical training. Those seeking an associate's degree can earn one in physical therapy assisting, occupational therapy assisting or nursing. The physical therapy assisting program includes both coursework and clinical preparation. Students in the occupational therapy assisting program are qualified for the certification exam administered by the National Board for Certification of Occupational Therapy, and they also receive a semester of field-based training. The nursing degree program covers topics such as nursing practice, adult and child health, pharmacology and psychosocial nursing, and it prepares graduates for the registered nurse licensure exam.
Tennessee College of Applied Technology - Elizabethton
Located in eastern Tennessee, the Tennessee College of Applied Technology campus in Elizabethton offers several health care programs leading to a diploma or a certificate. Fields of study offered include nursing assisting, dietary management and practical nursing.
The nursing assisting certificate program, which prepares students for Tennessee certification, includes courses and training that covers such topics as resident rights, basic nursing skills, personal care skills and restorative services. The Dietary Manager certificate program is an 8-month program that takes place online. Graduates can take the Dietary Manager Credentialing Exam to become certified dietary managers. The practical nursing diploma program is a 12-month program meant to prepare students for the state board examination required for licensure as practical nurses. The program covers topics such as nutrition, basic nursing skills, basic science, medical and surgical nursing, pediatrics and pharmacology.
