Essential Information

Most of the programs in Colorado that provide studies in health information systems are at the associate's degree level, but students can also pursue a master's degree in health information systems. Some programs are offered under the title of health information technology or medical office/administrative assistant. Courses cover records management, health insurance and billing, health data management, medical terminology and health care laws. Most programs provide students with the chance to gain hands-on skills through the completion of an internship experience. Arapahoe Community College

This college, located in Littleton, offers an Associate of Applied Science in Health Information Technology. The program consists of 65 credit hours and can take approximately 2-3 years to complete. In order to be admitted into the program, students must pass a criminal background check, interview with the chairperson and meet minimum scores on placement exams. Required courses for the degree include medical terminology, quality management, legal aspects, basic medical science and health data management & information systems. Upon successful completion of the degree program, students can pursue the RHIT (Registered Health Information Technology) exam.

Community College of Denver

Community College of Denver is located in Denver and offers the Associate of Applied Science in Healthcare Administration degree program. The degree program can be completed with 61 credit hours. Some required courses include customer service, keyboarding, accounting, records management, medical terminology and administrative office management. A cooperative education course is also required. The program includes training in Microsoft Office Suite products. Students can also pursue a medical administrative assistant certificate program.

Red Rocks Community College

Red Rocks Community College is located in Lakewood. The college's Medical Office Technology department offers the Associate of Applied Science in Medical Office program. The program takes approximately 4 semesters to complete. The degree program offers students the opportunity to take elective courses as well as an internship. Some program courses include medical office administration, healthcare communication, clinical skills and insurance and billing. A correlating certificate program is also available from Red Rocks Community College.

University of Colorado Denver

University of Colorado's Denver campus offers a Master of Science in Information Systems: Health Information Technology program. Students must complete database management systems and analysis, modeling and design before they may pursue courses such as emerging technologies, business intelligence systems, health information technology and health information technology management. Students are also given the opportunity to pursue an internship to gain real career experience.
