Bluegrass Community and Technical College

Bluegrass Community and Technical College is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. The school is a member of the Kentucky Community and Technical College System and offers an associate's degree in health information technology through its Business Division.

Associate in Applied Science in Medical Information Technology

This associate's degree program requires the completion of 63-67 credits and can prepare graduates to secure employment in hospitals, clinics and other health-related facilities. Graduates of the program are equipped with the technical knowledge and skills needed to interact with physicians and other health professionals.

Students begin by taking general education courses in composition, mathematics and sociology. Technical coursework includes health care delivery systems, clinical classification systems, medical terminology and legal aspects of health information. Students who complete the program are awarded the medical record coding and release of information data specialist certificates in addition to the associate's degree.

Graduates of the programs are qualified to sit for the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) examination, which is administered by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). Students are also eligible to take a variety of coding exams offered by AHIMA.

Eastern Kentucky University

Eastern Kentucky University was established in 1906 and provides two bachelor's degree options in health services administration through its Department of Health Promotion and Administration. The health care administration and informatics program is accredited by the Commission on the Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education.

Bachelor of Science in Health Services Administration - Health Care Administration and Informatics Option

The first two years of this career-oriented bachelor's degree program are considered pre-HAS (health services administration). Pre-HAS coursework includes human anatomy and physiology, accounting, statistics, computer systems, medical terminology and general education subjects. The health services administration curriculum focuses the third and fourth years on health information technology and management systems, legal issues, clinical computer systems, coding, various aspects of health care management and three professional practice placements. This program provides preparation for students who wish to find employment as health care administrators or health information specialists. Students who complete the program should be prepared to take the Registered Health Information Administrator certification exam administered by AHIMA.

Bachelor of Science in Health Services Administration - Ancillary Health Management Option

The health services administration program offers an option designed for students with a health care-related associate's degree, but students can still pursue the degree through a four-year plan. Depending on the general education requirements already completed from the associate's degree program, this bachelor's degree may be earned in three to five semesters. The coursework in this option is very similar to that of the health care administration and informatics option, but students aren't required to take the principles of management and intro to financial accounting courses in this program.
