Essential Information

Aspiring medical records technicians and coders in Arizona have a few educational options at area colleges. The certificate and associate's degree programs consist of concentrations and may offer internship opportunities. While state licensure isn't required for these healthcare workers, many employers look for technicians who are professionally certified.

Students who complete an associate's program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM) can become Registered Health Information Technicians by taking an exam through the American Health Information Management Association. Students who earn a certificate in this field can take a test offered by the National Healthcareer Association to become Certified Electronic Health Records Specialists. The paragraphs below briefly describe health information technology certificate and degree programs at three public schools in Arizona.

Central Arizona College

Located in the city of Coolidge, between Phoenix and Tucson, Central Arizona College offers a health information management associate's degree through its health careers program, as well as a certificate in coding and reimbursement. The 34-credit certificate program requires a prerequisite course in computer information systems. Students can expect to study human anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, insurance billing, health information technology and coding. Courses in ethics, pathophysiology and pharmacology are also required, as is a practicum in coding and reimbursement. Central Arizona's 71-credit associate's program in health information technology is CAHIIM-accredited, and credits earned in the coding certificate program can be applied towards degree requirements.

Phoenix College

As the flagship campus of the Maricopa Community College system in Arizona, Phoenix College offers a variety of health information technology programs and courses. Students in the medical billing and coding certificate program learn how to use information technology systems to track billing records. They can choose an emphasis in either hospital-based or physician-based health coding. The hospital-based program requires between 32 and 42.5 credit hours, while the physician-based program requires between 26 and 34 credit hours.

The school also offers a health information certificate program focused on long-term care settings that requires completion of 19 credit hours. The curriculum covers medical terminology, computer applications, legal aspects, health information management and diagnostic coding. In addition, Phoenix College offers a 68-credit associate's degree in health information technology that's accredited by the CAHIIM.

Pima Community College

Located in Tucson, Pima Community College offers a 28-credit certificate and a 60-credit associate's degree in health information technology, along with other health-related professional programs. Both programs require core courses in human anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, health information management, pharmacology and medical terminology. Students in the certificate program can choose from three concentrations, including medical billing and coding, medical front office support and health information management.
