Health Information Technology Degrees in NJ with Course Overviews

Profiled below are five public schools in New Jersey that feature health information technology programs.


Brookdale Community College

Brookdale Community College is located in the city of Lincroft. The school has an Associate in Applied Science in Health Information Technology degree program. This 61-credit degree program combines general education coursework with career studies. The career studies component makes up 41 of the required credits and includes courses in pathophysiology, health information and the law, medical terminology, and health information reporting. Students get to choose one elective course and are also required to complete a practicum.

Camden County College

Camden County College, located in Blackwood, features a health information technology associate degree program that's accredited by CAHIIM. Students enrolled in this degree program take courses in health care reimbursement, ambulatory coding, basic pharmacology, and statistical methods for health information. The program also includes a professional practice experience in the final semester. Graduates of the program should be prepared to pursue RHIT certification.

Passaic County Community College

Passaic County Community College is located in the city of Paterson and features an Associate of Applied Science in Health Information Technology program. This degree program requires 69 credits and can be finished in two years, which includes a summer semester. Students begin with courses in health care organization and health care technology. Eventually, students move on to courses in ICD and CPT coding, computer applications in health care, and principles of health care reimbursement. The program also includes two professional practice experience courses.

Raritan Valley Community College

Raritan Valley Community College is found in the city of Branchburg and has an Associate of Applied Science in Health Information Technology degree program that can be completed in 2 years. The program requires students to complete at least 68 credits of coursework. Students begin by taking courses in health care delivery systems and medical terminology. As the program progresses, students study ICD and CPT coding, statistics, and organizational resource management. Practicum experiences are held during the summer each year. The program is approved by CAHIIM, and graduates are eligible to sit for the RHIT exam.

Rowan College at Burlington County

Burlington County College is found in the city of Pemberton and offers an Associate of Applied Science in Health Information Technology. Students study business communications, pathology, coding, and reimbursement methodology. The program consists of 68 credit hours and prepares students to take the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) exam from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). Graduates are prepared to work in physician offices, health insurance groups, and state and federal health agencies. The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM).
