Health unit coordinator classes are generally part of short-term non-credit certificate programs. Students learn to perform various clerical duties at hospitals and medical centers, including maintaining and organizing patient records, transcribing physician orders and answering phone calls. These programs usually include a clinical internship at a health care facility along with coursework. After completing the program, students are eligible to pursue health unit coordinator positions with local and regional hospitals and medical clinics.


Lansing Community College

Lansing Community College, located in Lansing, is the third largest 2-year institution in Michigan. It serves more than 30,000 students each year and is the fifth largest employer in the Lansing area. Students can enroll in a short-term health unit coordinator certificate program that consists of a course in medical communication and pharmacology and another course providing hands-on health care experience. Students learn how to transcribe medical documents, communicate with nurses and other medical professionals, perform admissions duties and discharge patients.

Delta College

Located in University Center, Delta College was founded in 1961 and offers several certificate and degree programs. In addition, the school offers non-credit training courses through its LifeLong Learning Program, which includes a health unit coordinator certificate program. Students accumulate 240 hours of practical training, with the initial 80 hours spent in the classroom and the remaining hours used for clinical internships with a local hospital. Courses focus on topics like medical terminology, transcription, health care organization and health care safety and ethical issues.
