Laramie County Community College

Cheyenne-based Laramie County Community College offers three certificates and an associate's degree program in heating, ventilation and air conditioning/refrigeration (HVAC/R). The 15-credit hour integrated systems technology certificate program was developed with a grant from the U.S. Department of Labor and through a partnership with Wyoming's Department of Workforce Services. Core courses cover topics in industrial safety, electrical circuits, programmable logic controllers, fluid power, industrial piping systems, computer-aided design and industrial prints. The HVAC emphasis features topics in cooling fundamentals, refrigerant handling techniques and heating fundamentals. Participants also complete a refrigerant leak detection, charging, recovery and evacuation course.

The HVAC/R programs feature courses in electric motors, AC and DC electricity, energy efficient residential heating systems, industrial tools and safety, mechanical piping systems and refrigeration circuit components. Along with general education courses and an internship, the associate's degree program requires additional training in HVAC distribution systems, energy efficient air conditioning units, light commercial refrigeration systems and automatic building controls.

Career Requirements

HVAC installers and mechanics working with refrigerants must earn certification through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). In order to become EPA-certified, workers must pass a written exam in 1 of 3 specialized areas. The specialized areas include low-pressure refrigerants, servicing small appliances and high-pressure refrigerants.
