San Diego Miramar College

The heavy equipment training courses at San Diego Miramar College are provided by the school's diesel technology program. Students can pursue an associate's degree or a variety of certificate programs that can train them to service and repair heavy equipment. The courses completed in the Certificate of Performance programs can be applied to the Certificate of Achievement or Associate in Science programs.

Diesel Technology Certificate of Completion

These certificates are awarded for specializations that require fewer than 18 credits of coursework. San Diego Miramar College offers 10 different options through its diesel technology program, including a seven-credit Certificate of Performance for Heavy Equipment Undercarriage Systems and a 13-credit Certificate of Performance for Heavy Equipment Powertrains. Both of these certificate programs include courses in measuring tools and applied math, introduction to diesel technology and undercarriage. The heavy equipment powertrains curriculum also includes courses covering brakes, steering systems and transmissions.

Diesel Technology Certificate of Achievement

The diesel technology program at San Diego Miramar College offers Certificate of Achievement programs that require students to earn at least 18 credits. The Certificate of Achievement in Diesel Technology is available in several heavy equipment specializations, including heavy equipment technology and heavy duty transportation technology. Additional specializations covering engine overhauling and repair for Cummins or Caterpillar engines are also available.

The heavy equipment technology program requires students to complete 44 credits, while the heavy duty transportation technology program requires the completion of 47 credits. Both of these tracks focus on servicing, maintaining and repairing heavy duty vehicles powered by diesel fuel. Although the curriculum is similar in each program, there are some slight differences. The heavy duty transportation technology program includes courses in air brake systems and truck drive axles, which are not included in the heavy duty equipment technology option. The heavy duty equipment technology program also offers an undercarriage course that is not part of the other program.

Because this type of work can be dangerous, San Diego Miramar College emphasizes health and safety issues related to diesel vehicles. Students also learn to recognize violations of the workplace safety regulations issued by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and Environmental Protection Agency.
