Essential Information

Heavy equipment training programs are unfortunately rare in Indiana, although a couple of programs do exist. Both Vincennes University, a public 4-year university, and Ivy Tech Community College, a public 2-year college, offer associate's degree and technical certificate programs that equip students with the essential skills and knowledge required for a career that involves the operation of heavy equipment.

Vincennes University

Vincennes University offers an 60-hour Associate of Science in Diesel Technology that is geared toward the maintenance and repair of diesel trucks and heavy equipment. Students in this program can choose a John Deere agricultural technology or a John Deere consumer and commercial equipment concentration. Students in both programs learn how to service and repair diesel engines, tractors and other types of equipment. A cooperative work experience is required for each concentration. Vincennes University also provides a 60-hour Associate of Science in Mining Technology with a curriculum that teaches mining practices, mining health and safety, mining law and regulations, operations management and mine environment. This program prepares students for management positions in the mining industry.

Ivy Tech Community College

Students looking for training can also pursue a Technical Certificate in Automotive Technology at Ivy Tech Community College, which features a diesel heavy truck concentration. Students in this 34-credit program will receive a brief but intensive education spread out across three semesters, with coursework focusing on electrical systems, preventative maintenance, climate control systems, brakes, and steering systems.
