San Francisco State University
The holistic health certificate program is offered through the College of Extended Learning as an Open University program. Students enrolled in Open University programs are allowed to take regular classes at San Francisco State without being formally admitted to the university.
Holistic Health Certificate
To be admitted to this certificate program, students need to have earned, at minimum, 30 academic credit units. Students take courses in physiology/human anatomy as well as core holistic health classes and courses chosen from an emphasis area (Western perspectives, Eastern perspectives or human nature and holism). Students must also complete an internship and five units of elective courses.
Five Branches University
Five Branches University has been in operation since 1984 and has campuses in San José and Santa Cruz, California. It's accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ACAOM).
Tuina Massage Practitioner Certificate
Tuina massage is similar to acupuncture except the practitioner uses his or her fingers and hands instead of needles. This certificate program has four courses: two Tuina massage theory courses and two clinical courses. In the first clinical course, students practice on patients in a clinical environment under supervision. In the second clinical course, students have their own patients and practice under supervision. Students must meet prerequisites for each course.
Five Element Certificate
This certificate program combines modern psychology with the philosophical theory of classical Chinese medicine. Students take theory classes and complete clinicals. For the first clinical, students observe only. They are allowed to treat and diagnose patients under supervision in the second clinical. The third clinical involves students working in pairs to treat patients under supervision. Lastly, for the fourth clinical, students have their own patients whom they diagnose and treat under supervision. Students must meet prerequisites before taking each course.
Medical Qigong Practitioner Certificate
Medical Qigong practitioners treat patients with various conditions, including cancer, dysfunctions of the immune system and problems with internal organs. Patients receive prescription meditations and exercises after undergoing Qigong treatments. Students in this certificate program complete 128 hours of academic training and 72 hours of clinicals. All courses in the certificate program have prerequisites.
Sports Medicine Certificate
Students learn to treat orthopedic injuries, such as sprained ankles, lower back pain, knee injuries, tennis elbow and shin splints. They're trained to help patients increase their flexibility and stamina and reduce stress. Students take two courses in orthopedics and traumatology and complete two clinicals.
Academy of Chinese Culture and Health Sciences
This academy was founded in 1982. It operates one campus in Oakland, CA.
Tui Na Massage Therapy Certificate
The academy offers two certificates in massage therapy, one that takes 250 hours to complete and one that takes 500. The program is available in both Chinese and English. Students learn about oriental acupressure techniques and therapies combined with Western massage. Students take courses in ethics, health and hygiene, massage contraindications, acupoints, meridian, traditional Chinese medicine pathology and theory, Tui Na techniques, common ailments treatment, Qigong and Taiji.
Other School Options
Students can find a course in holistic health as part of the Bachelor of Science in Food and Nutritional Sciences program with concentrations in food science or dietetics and food administration at California State University, Fresno, approximately 7.3 mi. (11 min.) from downtown Fresno. Milan Institute Clovis, a for-profit school approximately 8.8 mi. (13 min.) from downtown Fresno, offers a massage therapy program that includes holistic techniques.
