Essential Information

Scientific research does not always support the claims of homeopathic medicine, and degree programs specifically in homeopathy are not commonly available from accredited U.S. schools or recognized by organizations like the American Medical Association. However, the topic is covered within programs in related areas, such as bachelor's degrees in alternative medicine or wellness, master's degrees in herbal studies, herbal medicine or alternative medicine, and doctoral degrees in naturopathy.

A high school diploma or equivalent and sufficient test scores are required for all these programs. A bachelor's degree is required for a master's or Ph.D. program. Ph.D. programs also require students to have work experience and have taken prerequisite courses in subjects like college algebra, biology, physics, and psychology. Most master's programs will require the completion of a thesis; Ph.D. programs require a dissertation.

Bachelor's Degrees in Alternative Medicine

Students pursuing bachelor's degrees in alternative medicine learn about the science and theories of homeopathic medicine as well as learn about related areas like herbology and naturopathy. These 4-year degrees may be found under program names like Bachelor of Science in Wellness and Alternative Medicine, Bachelor of Science in Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM), or just Bachelor of Science in Alternative Medicine. Undergraduate education programs related to homeopathy generally require some hands-on experience through laboratories or internships, though some fully online programs are also available.

Undergraduate programs in alternative medicine cover a variety of practices, including homeopathy, chiropractic, nutrition, and traditional Chinese medicine. The homeopathy-specific courses may discuss natural remedies, symptoms, and diagnosis. Common course topics in these degree programs include:

  • Nutrition fundamentals
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Principles of acupuncture
  • Introductory homeopathic theory
  • Homeopathy therapies
  • Holistic health

Master's Degrees Related to Homeopathy

Master's degree programs in herbal studies, herbal medicine or alternative medicine teach students advanced concepts relating to naturopathic medicine, traditional Chinese herbs and CAM. Graduate education in these fields might also include a research thesis conducted under the guidance of a faculty member.

Courses in master's degree programs cover an array of subjects, including homeopathic therapy and theory. Additional course topics may include:

  • Herbal therapy
  • Complementary and alternative medicine methods
  • Evidence-based medicine
  • Botanical medicine
  • Legal issues in CAM
  • Wellness coaching

Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine

Students wishing to incorporate homeopathy into medical practice often need a medical degree, such as a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine (ND). ND programs prepare students for careers as primary natural care physicians who incorporate integrative medicine into their practice. These programs often include one or more classes in homeopathy. An ND program typically takes about four years to complete and includes both classroom lectures and hands-on clinicals.

Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine programs typically include courses in traditional biomedical and clinical sciences as well as integrative medicine. Advanced courses related to homeopathy may cover therapies and treatments in alternative medicine. Potential course topics in an ND program include:

  • Homeopathic therapy
  • Botanical medicine
  • Generative medicine
  • Immunology
  • Pharmacology
  • Nutrition

  • Teacher

Individuals with master's degrees in alternative medicine or herbal studies can work in natural medicine or education but may need to seek additional education or certification to be eligible for employment. Graduates may also go on to medical school. Some possible career options for graduates include:

  • Alternative medicine practitioner

Licensure and Certification

As of 2014, 17 states currently have laws regulating naturopathic doctors. According to the Association of Accredited Naturopathic Medical Colleges, licensure requirements include graduating from an accredited naturopathic medical school and passing the Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Exam (NPLEX) exam.

A career in homeopathy can be enhanced by certification through a professional organization, like the Council for Homeopathic Certification (CHC). Though not required for professional practice, certification demonstrates a minimum standard of education and skill. Before obtaining certification from the CHC, applicants must complete CPR training and complete a minimum number of clinical hours.

While there are no degree programs specifically for homeopathy, there are a few that focus on related studies and include courses in it. Mostly alternative medicine programs, these programs train student to integrate practice like homeopathy into a medical practice.
