The school's business and technology division offers both certificate and associate's degree programs. The 21-credit culinary management certificate program prepares students for entry-level positions in the hospitality industry with coursework in risk management, cost control, food safety and marketing. Certificate holders are eligible to receive the National Restaurant Association's Management Development Diploma.
The school's associate's degree program in hospitality management provides the academic and practical training necessary to become a leader in the field. Students may choose to focus their studies on hotel and lodging management; tourism; or food and beverage management.
Louisiana State University - Eunice
Louisiana State University at Eunice offers students a variety of program options in hospitality management. The school's certificate program prepares students for a range of positions in the hospitality field with courses in salesmanship, hotel management, accounting, tourism and human resources management. Students may also pursue the university's associate's degree in management; hospitality management is one of six possible areas of concentration. The degree program combines a core curriculum of business courses in statistics, management, business law, economics and marketing with courses in tourism, as well as hotel and restaurant management. Students may also earn one credit after completing at least 60 hours of practical work experience in an approved program.
Northwestern State University of Louisiana
For 125 years, Natchitoches' Northwestern State University of Louisiana has been providing educational opportunities to students. The school offers a bachelor's degree in hospitality management and tourism through its Department of Family and Consumer Sciences. Students in this 120-semester-hour program can select a concentration in culinary arts, hospitality services or travel and tourism. Coursework includes hospitality management, consumer sciences, nutrition and health education. This is also available as a minor.
Southern University at Shreveport
Students at Southern University at Shreveport can enroll in certificate programs in food and beverage management and event management, as well as an associate's degree program in event management. The two-semester certificate program in food and beverage management provides training in marketing, food safety, purchasing, cost control and front office procedures. The program also includes real-world training at an affiliated hospitality site and has a flexible schedule, with day, evening and weekend classes provided onsite and classes offered online as well.
Southern University also offers event management programs that provide the skills for students to gain entry-level employment in the hospitality industry. The certificate program is 21 credit hours in length, and the associate's degree program requires 62 credit hours for graduation. Students learn how to manage events of all types, including holiday celebrations, sports events, corporate events, weddings and fundraising events.
University of Louisiana at Lafayette
This four-year public school, located in Lafayette, offers a bachelor's degree program in hospitality management through the B.I. Moody III College of Business Administration. In addition to traditional coursework in travel and tourism, food service operations, lodging and event planning, students also gain work experience through internships or part-time employment. The program emphasizes practical experience, and many courses require a hands-on lab component. The school's 'Lunch Club' provides a full-service fine dining environment for students in the program. Individuals in the program also work closely with professionals at the nearby Hilton Garden Inn to gain experience.
University of New Orleans
Based in New Orleans, this university has both a bachelor's and master's degree program dedicated to hospitality management within its Kabacoff School of Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Administration. Undergraduate students can choose one of several concentrations relating to hospitality, including hotel and lodging; convention and event management; food and beverage management; and tourism. Depending on the focus area selected, students may take coursework in international tourism, food preparation, convention management and hotel operations. The 120-credit-hour program requires students to complete 600 hours of work experience. An 18-credit-hour minor in hotel, restaurant and tourism is also available.
The master's degree program is designed to prepare future hospitality and tourism industry leaders. The hospitality management master's program focuses on research, problem solving, leadership strategies and change management. Courses cover topics in hospitality technology, destination development, revenue management, hospitality marketing and operation analysis. Thesis and non-thesis options are available. There is also an executive online master's degree program in hospitality and tourism management.
