In California, hotel and restaurant management certificate programs are most commonly found at 2-year public colleges. Some programs are offered in either hotel or hospitality management or restaurant management, and they can be general or focus on specific areas within each field. For example, specialized certificates related to restaurant management are available in such areas as culinary arts, food service management, dining room operations and catering. Similarly, hotel management certificates are sometimes offered to students seeking specific hotel industry positions, such as front office personnel, marketing and sales professional or human resource specialist.
American River College
American River College is a 2-year school in the city of Sacramento. Under its hospitality management division, the school offers two restaurant management certificate programs. There is a 41-unit culinary arts/restaurant management program that covers both culinary techniques and restaurant management. The 28-unit restaurant management program teaches students cost control, safety standards and menu planning, as well as sanitation, management and food preparation. In the dining room management course, students complete 8 hours of practical experience per week in the school's Oak Café.
Chaffey College serves more than 18,000 students annually at its campus in Rancho Cucamonga. The Hospitality Management Certificate program includes a variety of courses to help students prepare for supervisor positions in the industry. Those classes include topics in catering, human resources, hospitality law and operations. An Associate in Science in Hotel Management is also available.
This Cypress school offers certificate programs in 141 career-focused areas. The Hotel Management Certificate program teaches students about topics like revenue, beverages and food management. The required courses include guest relations, sanitation, marketing and an internship. With the addition of general education classes, students can also earn an Associate of Science in Hotel Management. The school also offers a Culinary Arts Certificate program that includes topics in restaurant management such as purchasing, hospitality law and cost controls.
Diablo Valley College
More than 20,000 students attend Diablo Valley College at its Pleasant Hill campus. The Certificate of Achievement in Restaurant Management program takes a hands-on teaching method. In this 47-unit program, a variety of courses are required, including food service management, cost control, wine pairing, operations and catering. The curriculum requires occupational work experience of up to 4 hours. An Associate in Science in Restaurant Management may also be pursued.
Grossmont College is a 2-year institution in the city of El Cajon. A Certificate of Achievement in Culinary Entrepreneurship is offered by the school, as well as an associate's degree in the field. The certificate program requires courses in accounting, communications and statistics, along with the fundamentals of tourism and hospitality management.
Set on a 121-acre plot in Oceanside, this school offers associate's degree and certificate programs in hospitality management and restaurant management. The 27-unit hospitality management program includes courses in cost control, guest services, marketing and human resources, while the 24-unit restaurant management program covers purchasing, management and special events. Other certificate programs are available in rooms division management, meeting and events management, dining room operations, catering operations and food service operations.
Orange Coast College
Each year more than 20,000 students attend Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa. The school offers three certificate programs in hotel management, with concentrations in sales/marketing, human resource management and front office. Each program includes 13.5 units of required core classes in interviewing, guest service and communication. Students can also earn a certificate or associate's degree in restaurant supervision, as well as a catering certificate.
Santa Rosa Junior College
This Santa Rosa school has more than 22,000 attendees each year. The school offers an 19.5-unit Culinary Arts-Restaurant Management Certificate. This program includes courses in beverage, operations and safety management. Additionally, there are a variety of electives offered, such as regional wine, conversation skills, the Spanish language and professional cooking basics.
