Houston Schools with Accounting Degrees
Houston is home to several colleges and universities that give students the choice of enrolling in undergraduate or graduate programs in accounting. In some cases, these programs may help students prepare for accounting certification exams. - As one of the largest community colleges in the nation, Houston Community College has satellite campuses throughout Houston, providing an easy commute to classes. The main campus is located about two miles from the center of the city and offers accounting certificate and associate's degree programs.
- Lone Star College - North Harris, located roughly 20 miles from downtown Houston, has the lowest tuition for in-district and state residents of the profiled schools. It offers a certificate and associate's degree in accounting.
- Situated about a mile from the central part of the city, the University of Houston provides bachelor's and master's degrees in the field.

Houston Community College
The accounting programs at Houston Community College are part of the school's business career cluster. This cluster also includes programs in finance, marketing, international business, real estate and supply chain management.
The courses required for this certificate can be completed in 3 full-time semesters. Topics covered include federal income tax, spreadsheets, accounting computer applications and managerial accounting principles. Students must earn 36 credits to receive this certificate.
Associate in Applied Science in Accounting
The curriculum for this degree program includes courses in business law and contracts, economics, accounting principles, auditing and computerized accounting applications. Some courses in this program have been accredited by the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy. These accredited courses satisfy some of the eligibility requirements for the Certified Public Accountant exam. This associate's degree program requires 60 credits for graduation.
Lone Star College - North Harris
This school is part of the Lone Star College System, and several other colleges in this system offer accounting programs in the Houston area as well. These include the University Park campus in Houston, the Montgomery campus in Conroe, the CyFair campus in Cypress and the Tomball campus in Tomball. These programs are also available online.
This certificate requires the completion of 18 credits. The curriculum includes courses in computers, management or business principles, federal income tax and accounting principles. A full-time student can obtain this certificate in 1 year.
Associate of Applied Science in Accounting
The curriculum for this degree program includes the same courses required for the Accounting Certificate with the addition of more courses applicable to accounting and the general education requirements. Business law, managerial accounting, economics and business communications are some of the topics students will learn about. Students are required to earn at least 60 credits to graduate from this program.
University of Houston
Accounting programs at the University of Houston are available through the C.T. Bauer College of Business, which is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. In addition to the standard BBA in Accounting and Master of Science in Accountacy programs, students can also complete a Professional Program in Accountacy, which is a 5-year program that combines graduate study with the undergraduate curriculum and qualifies graduates to sit for the Certified Public Accountant examination in the state of Texas.
BBA in Accounting
This degree program requires 120 credits for completion. Courses for the accounting major include federal income tax, intermediate accounting, cost accounting and accounting information systems. The core business courses cover topics, such as economics, financial management, marketing and statistical analysis.
Master of Science in Accountancy
This master's degree program includes several academic tracks, allowing students to focus on areas like internal auditing, taxation, or IT systems risk management. Each of these tracks is composed of multiple courses that can allow students to specialize in a specific area of the field. In addition to a specialization track, all master's degree students will take courses in subjects like financial statement analysis, tax research and fraud. An internship can also be completed for credit.
Students at San Jacinto College in Pasadena can take advantage of the 2 certificate programs or the associate's degree program in accounting. Texas Southern University is only 5 miles from downtown San Antonio and offers a BBA in Accounting. The University of St. Thomas, also located in Houston, offers 2 options for students who want to major in accounting. The school has a Bachelor of Business Administration with an accounting major and a Master of Science in Accounting program.
