Interior Design Programs at Houston Schools

Only a few schools in the Houston, Texas, area offer degree programs in interior design. This article looks at two institutions within a 40-minute drive of downtown and the programs they provide. Both of these schools are community colleges that offer Associate of Applied Science degree programs in interior design. Included in the article is a table of information about these schools that can enable prospective students to easily compare them.   • In the heart of the city, Houston Community College offers an interior design program. This school has received recognition from the Texas Board of Architectural Examiners.
  • San Jacinto Community College, about 15 miles from downtown, is the next-closest school with an interior design program. Its courses offer a study of both commercial and residential interiors.

Houston Community College

The two-year interior design program at Houston Community College is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.

Associate of Applied Science in Interior Design

The standard completion time of the Associate of Applied Science in Interior Design degree program is five semesters long. In the interior design graphics course students work at developing the skills necessary to complete technical and computer generated graphic drawings. The internship requirement of the program typically occurs in a student's final semester. Several occupational skills awards and certificates are also offered at this school in kitchen and bath design, interior decorating and interior design communication.

San Jacinto Community College

The end goal of the degree program at San Jacinto Community College is to make sure students are properly equipped for the business, creative and technical aspects of interior design work.

Associate of Applied Science in Interior Design

Learning business procedures and preparing presentations is all a part of the Associate of Applied Science in Interior Design program at San Jacinto Community College. Students spend a total of five terms in this program, and they can technically graduate with their degree in two years. Students can expect to take coursework on material methods estimating, technical drawing, history of interiors and fundamentals of space planning.
