Evening, weekend, and online classes are offered by some schools, although not all classes are available on flexible schedules. Clackamas Community College (CCC) is a two-year, public school that offers human resource management certificate programs at the Oregon City campus location. The Career Pathway Certificate in Human Resource Management Essentials is a 16-credit program designed for prospective students interested in a human resource (HR) career and professionals looking to enhance their working knowledge of the discipline. Contemporary personnel procedures are covered, which include hiring practices, working conditions and the duties of a personnel director. Employee benefits and compensation are covered as well.
The Certificate in Human Resource Management curriculum is designed for HR professionals interested in acquiring the Professional in Human Resources (PHR) certification. Students begin with an overview of the components that comprise American business, which include marketing and finance. Additional coursework explored within the program includes hiring practices, management fundamentals, employee labor relations, basic compensation and benefits and business laws. An instructor-approved cooperative work experience is also included in this 53-credit program.
Linfield College - Online and Continuing Education
Linfield College - Online and Continuing Education is a 4-year, private not-for-profit school that offers a Human Resource Management Certificate via the school's McMinnville campus location. The program, which is administered online, is designed for prospective students interested in a career in the field as well as working professionals who wish to acquire additional skills or advance in their present jobs. The program consists of 16 credits requiring the completion of two core courses and two electives.
Students will learn about management and decision-making practices and explore human resource functions that include recruitment and staffing, job performance appraisal, administration of wages and benefits, and labor relations. Electives include industrial organizational psychology and organizational behavior. Students must meet or complete a proficiency in mathematics, the required course of which is offered by the school.
Prospective students interested in human resource training programs may want to explore Marylhurst University's certificate program available at the school's Marylhurst campus. The 4-year, private not-for-profit university offers an 18-quarter credit Certificate in Human Resources. Students can choose from flexible training sessions and can attend classes during the day or evening, pursue their studies online, or attend classes during the weekend.
Program coursework focuses on human resource management functions including employee labor relations, compensation and benefits, employment law, performance appraisal and information systems. Additional coursework includes organizational development, legal issues, and business accounting and finance. Professional development seminars are required and students must complete a total of three that are selected from available offerings each term.
Portland State University
Portland State University (PSU) serves more than 28,000 students annually and offers a variety of programs that include a Human Resources Management Certificate administered through the Professional Development Center located in Portland. Consisting of six courses, the program includes classes focusing on management of human resources, employee and labor relations, basic principles of equal employment opportunity (EEO) and compensation.
Southern Oregon University
Southern Oregon University (SOU) offers a Certificate in Management of Human Resources through the School of Business in Ashland. The program focuses on the dynamics of behavior, including both group behavior and individual behavior. Coursework also explores communications, organizational behavior, conflict resolution and decision-making within the workplace. The curriculum provides lessons on performance appraisal and management, employee compensation and the interviewing process.
An advisor-approved practicum and internship is included in the program. The certificate is awarded after 36 credits of study. Positions for graduates include HR assistants and HR managers. To take part in this program, prospective applicants must meet one of the following requirements: students currently enrolled at SOU that are meeting the required guidelines for a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree program; students that currently have a 4-year undergraduate degree.
Prospective students that complete a certificate program in human resources management and have four years of relevant work experience are prepared to take the Professional in Human Resources Certification (PHR) exam that is offered by the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI). Certification is also available to applicants having a bachelor's degree and two years of relevant experience as well as holders of a master's degree that have worked in the field for at least one year. The earned degrees do not have be in the field of human resources but do provide applicants with the advantage of acquired industry knowledge and skills in preparation for taking the certification exam.
