Depending on the school, students may obtain a degree at the associate's, bachelor's, or master's level. Non-degree certificate programs are also available, and most business programs offer an HR management course. Some schools include internship opportunities within their programs. Graduate-level programs often include a high level of research.

Appalachian State University

Appalachian State University, located in Boone, is a four-year public school that offers both graduate and undergraduate degrees. The Walker College of Business at this university offers a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in Management with a concentration in human resource management. Students who choose to pursue this concentration complete core business and management classes, as well as classes in human resources management. At the graduate level, Appalachian State offers a Master of Arts in Industrial-Organizational Psychology and Human Resource Management (IOHRM), a cross-disciplinary degree that is jointly administered by the Department of Management and the Department of Psychology. The graduate program requires 48 semester hours, or about two years, to complete. In addition, most students pursue internships over the summer between their first and second years. The IOHRM program is designed to aid human resources managers by helping them to understand the current research and psychological theories of behavior within an organization.

Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College

This two-year public school is located in Asheville, and offers associate's degrees and certificate programs. The Associate's in Applied Science in Business Administration - Human Resources Management degree is a two-year program that requires a total of 76 credit hours to complete. Coursework involves an overview of fundamental business knowledge, with courses that help the student to gain a fuller understanding of the legal and technical aspects of recruiting, training, and compensating employees. Technical knowledge is emphasized through computer and word processing courses. In addition, students are required to successfully complete classes covering basic math, writing, and public speaking.

Central Piedmont Community College

A two-year public school located in Charlotte, Central Piedmont Community College offers certificate programs and associate's degrees, and has a total population of about 20,000 students. This school offers an Associate in Applied Science in Business Administration with a human resources management specialization. Required courses cover topics such as human relations, employment law, recruiting, and compensation and benefits. Also of interest is the certificate in business administration with a human resources generalist specialization.

Fayetteville Technical Community College

Located in Fayetteville, this is a two-year public school that has associate's degree and certificate programs, and offers an Associate in Applied Science in Business Administration with a concentration in human resources management. This degree program requires a total of 70 credit hours, or five semesters of work, including a summer session, and covers the basics of business, communications, math, and writing. There are also a number of certificate programs that may be of interest to the student of human resources management, including an equal opportunity and employee relations certificate, a payroll and benefits specialist certificate, a training and development specialist certificate, a human resources assistant certificate, a human resources leadership certificate, and a human resources staffing specialist certificate.

Gardner-Webb University

A public, four-year university with a Southern Baptist religious affiliation, this Boiling Springs-based school offers bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees. The Godbold School of Business offers a Master's of Business Administration with an emphasis on human resources management. This MBA requires a total of 36 credit hours of study, 30 of which are core MBA courses. The student must also complete six credit hours, a total of two courses, specifically related to the field of human resources management. The options for these later courses include employment law, motivational techniques, leadership, and organizational staffing. Students can complete this degree program in as little as two years, and must complete their studies within six years to qualify for graduation. Gardner-Webb also offers an online MBA plus human resources management certificate program. This program requires students to complete all of the core MBA classes, as well as 18 credit hours, or six courses, in the field of human resources management.

Guilford Technical Community College

In Jamestown, Guilford Technical Community College offers associate's degrees and certificate programs, including an Associate of Applied Science in Business Administration with a concentration in human resource management. This degree program requires a total of 68 credit hours to complete, which is about four semesters of course work. In addition to courses specific to human resources, this degree program includes fundamental business courses, communications classes, computer skills, math, and critical thinking. A certificate program requiring 18 credit hours to complete is also available. This certificate is obtained by taking six courses over two semesters, and includes courses on employment law, training, compensation, and recruit selection.

University of Mount Olive

Located in Mount Olive, this is a four-year private school that offers a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in human resources management. At Mount Olive, the Tillman School of Business offers a human resources management major program. This degree requires 126 credit hours of study, with 36 credit hours of core business curriculum, and 27 credit hours of courses related to human resources management. These later courses include employment law, benefits, labor relations, training, and organizational behavior. In addition, students must complete non-business courses, including basic math, English, history, humanities, and science. There is also a nighttime BSBA available for adults. A human resources management minor is also offered by this school. The minor requires seven classes, a total of 21 credit hours. There are three mandatory classes, and a choice of four additional classes which must be chosen from a list of seven possibilities.

Pitt Community College

Pitt Community College in Winterville is a two-year public school that has certificate and associate's degree programs. The Business Administration Department offers an Associate in Applied Science in Human Resources Management. This is a four semester program that requires at least 75 credit hours to complete. Students study business fundamentals, math, English, and computers. Human resources-specific classes include courses on labor relations, compensation and benefits, personnel planning, and employment law. This school also offers a certificate program in human resources management that requires at least 17 credit hours to complete, and includes four HR-specific courses, an introductory business class, and a choice of one of three computer classes.

Wake Technical Community College

Wake Technical Community College, located in Raleigh, is a two-year college that offers certificate and associate's degree programs. This college offers an Associate's Degree in Business Administration with a concentration in human resources management that requires four semesters, a total of 64 credit hours, to complete. Fundamental business knowledge, basic math, writing, science, and computer skills are covered in addition to the HRM-specific courses. These later courses include employment law, compensation, and training. Students are also required to take two major-specific electives. At the non-degree level, a human resources management certificate requiring five classes and 15 credit hours of study, and covering training, compensation, employment law, and recruitment, is also available.

Western Carolina University

A four-year public school in Cullowhee, this university has bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degree programs. The college of business offers a program that leads to a Master of Science in Human Resources. This program requires the completion of 36 semester hours, which include courses in orientation to human resources, human resources research and evaluation methods, employee and labor relations and staffing. In addition, the student must complete a field experience and a seminar in human resources.
