Graduates of human services degree programs are qualified to serve the public in a variety of outreach programs, working in fields like social work, psychology and family therapy. In Texas, students have several options for human services training. You may choose between associate's and bachelor's degree programs, although at least one master's degree in the field is also offered. Fieldwork experiences or internship opportunities are often included in such programs.

The field of social work is designed to ensure that all people have equal access to opportunities, services and resources. Career opportunities are available in state and federal rehabilitation programs, city governments, private hospitals, insurance companies and schools.

Profiled below are the seven public and private Texas schools offering human services programs.

Angelina College

Angelina College in Lufkin enrolls almost 6,000 students annually. The private college offers two different Associate of Applied Science in Human Services degrees for students interested in a career in human services. One of the two programs is a specialty in case management. Within this program, students can further narrow their focus to an emphasis on either family systems or gerontology. The other human services degree program is a specialty in alcohol and drug abuse counseling. Students in this program will learn about crisis intervention, abnormal psychology, and counseling theories. Both programs require students to complete 61 credit hours and complete field work.

Austin Community College District

Austin Community College District in Austin is a large public college with an enrollment of more than 45,000 students. The school offers interested students one human services degree program: the Associate of Applied Science in General Human Services. This program requires between 65 and 68 credit hours to complete and is designed to be completed in four semesters. Students in the general human services programs will learn about behavior management, therapeutic recreation, and addictions. Students in this program will also be required to complete an internship. Graduates of this program will be prepared to enter the workforce in the social services field.

LeTourneau University

LeTourneau University is a private interdenominational university located in Longview. The school serves almost 3,000 students. LeTourneau offers one human services degree program, the Bachelor of Human Services. Human Services students at LeTourneau will learn about psychology, the criminal justice system, and addiction. The will also learn about grant writing and professional ethics. Graduates of the program will be prepared for careers in the health care field, child and family services, or rehabilitation.

Saint Edward's University

Saint Edwards University is a Roman Catholic College located in Austin. The school enrolls more than 5,000 students a year. Human services students may wish to explore Saint Edward's Bachelor of Science in Social Work. Graduates of the social work program are eligible to sit for the state's Licensed Social Worker exam. Students in the bachelor's program will study subjects like social policy, marriage and family, and race, class, and gender. Students will also gain real world experience in a social service setting during a 430 hour practicum.

Southwestern Assemblies of God University

Southwestern Assemblies of God University is a private university that is affiliated with the Assemblies of God church and is located in Waxahachie. The school enrolled more than 2,000 students in the 2011 school year. Students seeking a degree in human services can enroll in Southwestern's Bachelor of Arts in Social Work program. The university's social work program teaches students about social welfare, cultural issues, addiction and behavioral issues, and counseling methods from a Christian Pentecostal perspective. This program requires students to complete a total of 127 credit hours, 60 of which are dedicated to the social work major.

University of North Texas

The University of North Texas is located in Denton and enrolls more than 37,000 students annually. UNT offers several degree programs for human services students. Undergraduates can choose to earn a Bachelor of Social Work that requires the completion of 36 hours of social work courses in addition to the general education courses required for a bachelor's degree. The required courses offered include human behavior and environment, diversity in human services, and ethics in social work. Students in this program will also complete field work. UNT also awards a Bachelor of Science in Rehabilitation. Graduate students can enroll in the Master of Science in Rehabilitation Counseling program. This program prepares students to work with individuals with various disabilities to set and achieve certain goals. Graduates of this program will find careers in hospitals or other health care settings, social service agencies, schools, and non-profit agencies. Graduates of the program will be eligible for state and national counselor licensing.

Wayland Baptist University

Wayland Baptist University is a private Southern Baptist institution located in Plainview. The school serves more than 6,500 students yearly. Human services students can earn either an Associate of Applied Science or a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in human services from Wayland Baptist. Bachelor's students must complete 36 credits for the major, half of which should be upper division courses. Some of the human services courses offered include social problems, cultural diversity, and research writing methods. Graduates of the human services program will be prepared to enter the workforce in the social services field.
