HVAC Schools in Kentucky with Career Training Summaries

Essential Information

In Kentucky, students interested in training for heating, air conditioning, and ventilation (HVAC) careers may choose from certificate, diploma, and associate's degree programs offered by a number of two-year colleges throughout the state. The core curricula for these various program levels are similar, with general education coursework included in diploma and associate's degree programs. Some programs include refrigeration handling, and others offer students the opportunity to complete work-study coursework or internships.


Ashland Community and Technical College

At this community college in Ashland, students can pursue an HVAC certificate, diploma or associate's degree. Certificates range from 9-37 credits and are available for prospective environmental systems repair helpers, environmental control systems servicers, domestic air conditioner and furnace installers and refrigeration mechanics. Students in all certificate programs take courses in HVAC electricity and refrigeration fundamentals.

Students enrolled in the HVAC mechanic diploma program are required to complete 47-54 credits, while the associate degree in air conditioning technology consists of 60-66 credits. Both programs feature courses in refrigeration fundamentals, HVAC electricity, electrical components, duct design, cooling/heating and dehumidification, and heat pump application.

Big Sandy Community and Technical College

Big Sandy Community and Technical College is located in Prestonsburg and offers air conditioning technology diploma and associate degree programs. Students learn about installation and servicing of HVAC equipment. While the diploma and associate degree programs both include air conditioning technology courses, students who want to earn the degree need to complete general education requirements.

Bluegrass Community and Technical College

Based in Lexington, Bluegrass Community and Technical College features several HVAC programs. Certificate options include environmental control systems servicer, environmental systems repair helper, domestic air conditioner and furnace installer, and refrigeration mechanic.

The HVAC mechanic diploma program consists of 46-53 credits, while the HVAC associate degree program ranges from 60-66 credits. Both programs include coursework in refrigeration fundamentals, HVAC electricity, electrical components, cooling and dehumidification, heat pumps, and heating and humidification.

Bowling Green Technical College

Bowling Green Technical College is located in Bowling Green and offers HVAC training at the certificate, diploma and associate degree levels. Certificate options include environmental systems repair helper, environmental control systems servicer, and domestic air conditioner and furnace installer.

The HVAC mechanic diploma program requires 47-54 credits and provides students with the education and training needed to pursue employment in the field. The air conditioning technology associate degree program is 64-66 credits long and includes courses, lab work, a practicum and journeyman preparation.

Elizabethtown Community and Technical College

Located in Elizabethtown, this community college offers HVAC diploma and associate degree programs as well as certificate programs in environmental systems repair, domestic air conditioning and furnace installation, and refrigeration. Students enrolled in the HVAC mechanic diploma program are required to complete 47-54 credits of coursework. Courses include HVAC electricity, refrigeration fundamentals, cooling/heating and dehumidification, duct design and electrical components. The associate degree program includes a minimum of 60 credits and features the same technical coursework as the diploma program, with the addition of general education courses.

Jefferson Community and Technical College

Jefferson Community and Technical College is based in Louisville and offers an HVAC diploma and several certificate programs. The diploma program requires students to complete 46-53 credits and teaches them to read blueprints, calculate heat gain/loss, troubleshoot components and work safely.

Certificates are offered in environmental control systems servicer, environmental systems control repair helper, domestic air conditioner and furnace installer, and refrigeration mechanic. Students can expect to complete anywhere from 9-35 credits of coursework, depending on their chosen certificate program.

Owensboro Community and Technical College

Owensboro Community and Technical College is located in Owensboro and has HVAC certificate and diploma programs and an air conditioning technology associate degree program. The programs combine academic coursework with hands-on experience.

Certificates are offered in environmental control systems, environmental systems repair, domestic air conditioner and furnace installation, and refrigeration. The diploma program requires a minimum of 47 credits of coursework, and the associate degree program requires at least 60 credits. Full-time students can complete the associate program in four semesters, and they get to take courses in heating/cooling dehumidification, HVAC electricity, refrigeration fundamentals and heat pump application.

Somerset Community College

This school in Somerset allows students to choose from certificate, diploma and associate degree programs that cover HVAC concepts. Students have the option of pursuing a 15-credit environmental systems helper certificate, 16-credit environmental control systems servicer certificate, 28-credit refrigeration mechanic certificate or 37-credit domestic air conditioner and furnace installer certificate.

The HVAC mechanic diploma program consists of 48-51 credits and can be completed in three semesters. The air conditioning technology associate degree program totals 60-66 credits. In addition to completing coursework, students receive journeyman preparation and are required to participate in a practicum.

Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College

Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College is located in Cumberland and features several types of HVAC programs. In addition to an HVAC mechanic diploma program, students can pursue environmental control systems servicer, environmental systems repair helper and refrigeration mechanic certificates.

The air conditioning technology associate degree program offers students the opportunity to earn 1,500 Kentucky State HVAC apprenticeship hours. The diploma program includes courses in cooling and dehumidification, refrigeration, HVAC electricity and electrical components.

West Kentucky Community and Technical College

Located in Paducah, West Kentucky Community and Technical College offers HVAC certificates and a diploma. Certificates are available in domestic air conditioner and furnace installation, environmental control systems, environmental systems repair, chiller maintenance, boiler maintenance and refrigeration.

The HVAC mechanic diploma can be earned in three semesters, and students can be awarded certain certificates as they complete the necessary courses while working toward the diploma. Students are required to complete general education requirements, technical courses and lab work. All of the coursework completed in the certificate or diploma programs can be applied toward the general occupational studies associate degree program. Students who have taken dual-credit courses in high school might be able to jump into the second semester of the program when they enroll.

Career Requirements

HVAC professionals in Kentucky are required to obtain licensure through the Division of HVAC within the Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction. The state offers licensing designations at the apprentice, journeyman and master levels. Each level of licensure requires a certain amount of experience and completion of at least one exam.
