Essential Information

In Illinois, restaurant management studies are usually offered through more general programs in hospitality management or leadership. Other relevant areas of study include culinary management, restaurant operations or food service. This training is mainly offered through associate degree programs, although a few bachelor's and master's degree programs are also available. Additionally available are undergraduate certificate programs. Although restaurant management careers generally do not require a postsecondary degree, prospective managers may gain a competitive advantage by completing a degree program. DePaul University

Located in the heart of Chicago, this Catholic university was founded in 1898. Through the Driehaus College of Business and the School of Hospitality Leadership, students can pursue a Bachelor of Science in Business degree in hospitality leadership. This program requires students to choose a concentration, and one of the options is food and beverage management. Coursework in this concentration includes food service purchasing, club management, contract food service management, and international wine management. This undergraduate program also requires two internships and ServSafe certification. Students can combine this major with a minor in either revenue management or non-profit hospitality leadership, and students who choose a different major have the option to earn a hospitality leadership minor. Graduate students can pursue a Master of Business Administration with a concentration in hospitality leadership or a Master of Science in Hospitality Leadership and Operational Performance.

Elgin Community College

A public community college northwest of Chicago in the city of Elgin, Elgin Community College was established as a junior college in 1950. Students can pursue an Associate of Applied Science in Culinary Management - Restaurant Management through a program that includes courses in quantity food purchasing, hospitality supervision, beverage management, menu design, and dining room management. A restaurant operations certificate program is also available that provides most of the courses required for the major in the degree program and excludes the general education curriculum.

In the suburb of Palatine, Harper College is a public community college with history dating back to 1966. Joliet Junior College

Joliet Junior College in Joliet was founded in 1901. Students can pursue an Associate in Applied Science in Hospitality Management through a program that includes courses in hospitality law, managerial accounting, nutrition, event planning, and food purchasing. Joliet Junior College also offers a 28-semester-hour Hospitality Management Certificate of Achievement and a 15-semester-hour Hospitality Management Certificate of Completion. Roosevelt University

A private institution in Chicago, Roosevelt University was founded in 1945 in honor of the nation's 32nd president. Undergraduate students can pursue a Bachelor of Science in Hospitality and Tourism Management. Southern Illinois University Carbondale

A public institution in the town of Carbondale, Southern Illinois University was founded as a teacher's college in 1869.
