Essential Information

Students in Indiana interested in earning an education in cosmetology may choose to earn an associate's degree from Vincennes University or complete a training program offered by the Paul Mitchell School in Indianapolis. Coursework included in such programs concentrates on the hands-on development of skills by students. Supervised practice such skills on real clients is not uncommon. The associate's degree program additionally includes general education courses.

Paul Mitchell The School Indianapolis

A cosmetology program, a cosmetology instructor program and continuing education options are available at the Paul Mitchell The School Indianapolis, which can be found in Indianapolis. The cosmetology program at this school is taught in three stages: core, adaptive and creative. In the core phase, students acquire the necessary foundation to perform cosmetology work; they then build upon that and obtain intermediate skills in the adaptive phase of the program. In the creative phase, students take on advanced chemical and hairdressing techniques.

The school's cosmetology instructor program teaches students basic theory, how to grade and record tests and how to prepare cosmetology students for state exams. The advanced academy program at this school is for students who need continuing education in advanced areas of makeup, hair coloring and hair cutting. These advanced academy classes take 3 to 5 days to complete.

Vincennes University

This Vincennes-based university offers a program that results in an Associate of Science in Cosmetology, which requires 63 credits and takes 4 semesters to complete. This program requires students to take 4 cosmetology courses that cover issues like manicuring, facials, sanitation, ethics, hair coloring, hair styling, professionalism, hair coloring and permanent waving. In addition to taking these cosmetology courses, students learn about accounting, small businesses and personal financial management. Finally, because this is an associate's degree program, there are general education requirements in this program in areas like English, psychology, communications and mathematics. Students who have completed a cosmetology program at another school may transfer some of their credits here when enrolling in this program.

Career Requirements

In order to be a practicing cosmetologist in Indiana, the Indiana State Board of Cosmetology and Barber Examiners requires individuals to finish the equivalent of a 10th grade education, be 18 years of age or older and complete 1,500 hours of education from a cosmetology school that has been approved by the state. This education must have been earned in the past 3 years, and students must then pass the licensing examination for cosmetologists.

Out of over 70 schools in Indiana, there are only 2 options for cosmetology students looking for a not-for-profit school. State licensing requirements for cosmetologists are met by both of these schools' programs.
