Prospective industrial design students in Arizona may attend Arizona State University or GateWay Community College for training programs. Degrees are offered at the associate, bachelor's and master's degree levels. An undergraduate certificate program is also available. Topics of study include materials, computer modeling and product development. Students may be required to demonstrate the skills they've learned throughout their program by completing a final project, and students at the graduate level also complete an internship experience. Below are overviews of the two Arizona schools, followed by a comparison table with program and tuition info.
Arizona State University
Located in the desert city of Tempe, Arizona State University (ASU) has a couple options for aspiring industrial design professionals. The Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts offers bachelor's and master's degree programs in the field of industrial design, and graduate students can even select concentration options in new product innovation and interaction design.
The Bachelor of Science in Design - Industrial Design program emphasizes qualitative research and explores aspects of visual communication as well as sustainability within the environment. Students learn about ecology and social equity, microeconomic principles, materials and design, computer modeling, and visual methods for problem solving. The final year of the program includes a design project and also gives students a chance to work with their peers who are enrolled in other programs.
The Master of Science in Design - Interaction Design concentration option focuses on the interaction of people through the use of services and products. Typical subjects studied include virtual shopping, information retrieval systems and how individuals relate to their environment. Students must complete 36 credits of graduate coursework and have the option to choose a thesis or applied project to round out the program.
The Master of Science in Design - New Product Innovation focuses on teamwork, intellectual property and user-centered products. This degree path requires 36 hours of coursework and the completion of a final project, and students are required to complete a design presentation, executive summary, and project document.
The Master of Industrial Design (MID) degree program is available in two- or three-year formats and focuses on qualitative and design research. The three-year MID program provides extended study and training in industrial design for students who do not have a bachelor's degree in one of the required areas. The three-year MID adds courses in visual methods for problem solving, materials and design, computer modeling, and several studio courses focusing on varying levels of industrial design techniques and methods. Students in both formats are required to complete an internship and capstone course.
GateWay Community College
GateWay Community College (GCC) is located about five miles from the center of downtown Phoenix and offers a Certificate of Completion in Industrial Design Technology and an Associate of Applied Science in Industrial Design Technology.
Both programs focus on product design and development. Students can learn the techniques and methods used in rapid part production and manufacturing. The programs also teach students about mechanical design simulation software, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, assemblies, and kinematics.
The Certificate of Completion in Industrial Design Technology consists of 25 credit hours of coursework, and the Associate of Applied Science in Industrial Design Technology requires the completion of 62-68 credits of coursework. Students who complete either program should be prepared to enter the workforce as engineering technicians, product designers, or technical assistants.
