Essential Information

One school in Texas offers a 1-year undergraduate certificate program in industrial design technology, and students can focus on pipe design, commercial building design or mechanical design. Industrial design studies are also offered at the associate, bachelor's and master's degree levels. Topics often covered include conceptual design, visual communications, design technology and use of design materials. Read below about the two institutions in Texas with certificate and degree programs in industrial design.

Alvin Community College

Alvin Community College (ACC) is located in Alvin, about 34 miles south of Houston, and has the only industrial design-based certificate program. This 1-year industrial design technology program trains students to work in design and drafting and offers courses in technical drafting, computer-aided drafting and solid modeling. The certificate program has optional specializations in pipe design, commercial building design and mechanical design.

ACC also has an Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree program in industrial design technology with the same optional specializations as offered in the certificate program. Graduates of this program are prepared to work as industrial design drafters. Students of this A.A.S. degree program must take some classes in drawing, technical trigonometry and strength of materials. Those in the pipe design track may complete classes in pipe and civil drafting. Some of the required studies in the commercial building design concentration involve structural, commercial architectural and civil drafting, while students pursuing the mechanical design option take courses in parametric modeling and design, mechanical drafting and machine design.

University of Houston

The University of Houston is situated in the Southeast Houston district, and although no certificate program is available, the university does have bachelor's and master's degree programs in industrial design. The Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture has a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree program in industrial design that combines study of industrial design, architecture and interior architecture. During the B.S. degree program, students complete a number of studio courses and an internship. They also take courses in materials and methods, human factors in design and design issues.

The Master of Science (M.S.) degree program in industrial design highlights health, world community and sustainable design. Students entering this 36-credit program without an undergrad degree in industrial design may be required to complete additional coursework. Participants are able to format the program curriculum to meet personal research and career plans. The coursework covers topics such as 3D visualization and advanced design materials, and students participate in industrial design studio classes and complete a design thesis. Alongside the M.S. degree, students may opt to earn an entrepreneurship certificate through the university's Bauer College of Business. Some of this certificate program's courses include capital and legal forms, private equity and investment banking, and technology commercialization.
