Houston Schools with IV Certification Programs

Texas Southern University
Located in the heart of Houston, Texas Southern University (TSU) is known for its diverse faculty, wide array of academic programs and state-of-the-art facilities. TSU's College of Continuing Education offers several health-related programs, including an IV therapy program.
Intravenous (IV) Therapy Program
The IV therapy program is an 8-hour program that can be completed in one day. This training is aimed at healthcare professionals who perform intravenous therapy but want refresher courses to upgrade their skills and keep up with any medical changes. While the main focus is on starting and running an IV, the course also focuses on IV supplies and equipment, anatomy and physiology, drug calculations and patient care. Also discussed is the relationship between pharmacology and IV therapy.
National Pharmacy Technician Association
The National Pharmacy Technician Association is a large professional organization committed to promoting the value of pharmacy technicians and providing valuable training programs. The organization, whose members are pharmacy technicians, offers programs for compounding certification, chemotherapy certification and sterile products (IV) certification. NPTA members get a discounted rate on tuition.
Sterile Product Certification Course
NPTA's sterile product certification course teaches pharmacy technicians about sterile product preparation and aseptic techniques. The course meets the requirements set by the State Board of Pharmacy for pharmacy technician IV certification. This is a home-based course; students must complete nine learning modules and pass a comprehensive exam. Topics of study include aseptic techniques and calculations, facilities, garb and equipment, quality control and assurance, sterile product preparations, hazardous vial manipulations, chemotherapy and properties of sterile products. When the home-based portion is complete, the student completes a 2-day training session at the NPTA Training Institute in Houston, Texas.
Other School Options
Students can also find pharmacy technician certificate programs at Houston Community College, located 1.8 miles from downtown Houston and San Jacinto Community College, located 21 miles away. Once the student becomes a pharmacy technician, he or she can take a training course and earn IV therapy certification.
