Essential Information

Java classes are most often available through associate's and bachelor's programs in computer programming, computer science, information technology or computer information systems, although certificate programs in Java programming alone do exist. These programs will take students from the basic processes of programming to the more nuanced particulars of computer science.

Students usually study topics such as the following as part of degrees or certificates that include Java classes:

  • Interface with additional programming languages, such as C++
  • Networking
  • Managing operating systems
  • Database development
  • Write file systems
  • Make Web pages
  • Integration of graphics in Java programs

List of Classes

Beginning Java Programming

This introductory course familiarizes students with the basics of using computer systems with Java. Students practice using Java computer languages and become familiar with software programs, including Web programs that use Java. Students examine different features available with Java programming, including truth tables and Boolean expressions. They also gain experience using graphics and incorporating them into different software programs.

Intermediate Java Programming

Students taking this course become familiar with the modern Java programming systems and how they work. They participate in object-oriented programming, which refers to writing data sets that deal solely with one topic, and creating applications for the data. Students use graphics to make the data more complete and integrated and often incorporate generic programming skills into their work with Java. An intermediate Java course covers object-oriented programming in more detail than previous courses and teaches students to make applications that use data sets.

Advanced Java Programming

Students usually use this Java course to build upon acquired skills and cover topics previously neglected, such as security issues. Students practice interacting with various computer databases and become familiar with advanced computer coding. Students may take an advanced Java course to learn about application security principles and the use of the language with databases. They also learn to interact with various software programs, including Oracle, Microsoft Visual Basic and Microsoft SQL to create Web pages and make them user-friendly.
