New Jersey City University

New Jersey City University, the largest among the Jersey City universities with nursing programs, is a 4-year public school that serves more than 8,000 students each year. Nursing studies are available through its College of Professional Studies.

Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing, RN-to-BSN

New Jersey City University's 128-credit RN-to-BSN nursing program is open to registered nurses who have completed diploma or associate's degree programs in nursing, as well as to foreign nurses licensed in their home country. Applicants must obtain a New Jersey Registered Nurse License before beginning the program. The RN-to-BSN program combines classroom study with lab work and role socialization in professional nursing. The National League of Nursing Accrediting Commission has accredited the program, while the New Jersey State Board of Nursing has given the program its approval.

Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing, Accelerated Program

The 63-credit Accelerated BSN program at New Jersey City University allows college graduates to transition into a nursing role with only 12 months of study. Courses include maternal and child nursing, healthcare law and ethics, psychiatric and community health nursing, contemporary professional nursing and fundamentals of nursing practice. Prior to entering the nursing program, students must complete prerequisite courses in areas including developmental psychology, microbiology and anatomy. Upon completion of the program, which is available at both the Jersey City and Wall Township campuses, graduates are qualified to take the nursing licensing examination.

Hudson County Community College

With nearly 9,000 students, Hudson County Community College, a 2-year public institution, is the second largest among New Jersey nursing schools located in Jersey City.

Certificate in Practical Nursing

The 46-credit certificate program in practical nursing includes 40 credits of specialized nursing study and six credits of general education. The program is designed to prepare students for holistic nursing, so the focus is on strengthening communication skills, building understanding of legal and ethical standards, developing critical thinking skills and fostering the ability to implement caring interventions. Courses include practical nutrition, practical nursing, human biology and an introduction to psychology.

Associate of Science in Nursing

Preparing students for the New Jersey state licensure examination for registered nurses, this 65-credit associate's degree program in nursing is accredited by the National League of Nursing Accreditation Commission and the New Jersey Board of Nursing. The program includes both the study of nursing theory and practical nursing. Courses include anatomy and physiology, microbiology, nursing leadership, psychology and series of courses covering nursing processes, practices and concepts.
