There are a number of colleges in Kansas that offer information systems degree programs at various levels. Undergraduate programs at the associate's and bachelor's degree levels are the most common. Credits from an associate's degree may be transferable to a 4-year school. Some programs are available online. Prerequisites vary from program to program. Allen County Community College
Allen County Community College is located in the town of Iola. The 2-year college enrolls almost 2,800 students. Allen County students who are interested in information systems can enroll in the school's Associate in Science in Information Technology program. This program can be completed in 4 semesters and requires a minimum of 64 credits. Students will begin by studying intro to computer programming and Microsoft Office in the first year. In the second year, courses will include computer repair, Cisco networking, and C++ programming.
Hutchinson Community College
Hutchinson Community College is located in the town of Hutchinson. More than 5,500 students attend the community college annually. The school awards an Associate of Arts in Computer Information Systems. This program prepares students for entry-level jobs in the field or can be transferred to a four year university for students who wish to complete a bachelor's degree. Students in this program will need to complete at least 65 credit hours. Courses include introduction to computer engineering, digital design, and data structures and algorithms.
Independence Community College
Independence Community College is located in the town of Independence. The school offers certificate and associate's degree programs to more than 1,200 students a year. The school's Associate of Science in Computer Information Systems degree program can be completed in four years. Students will study macroeconomics, programming language, and systems analysis and design. The program also offers electives like web design and development and networking and data communications. Students will complete at least 64 credit hours.
Labette Community College
Labette Community College is located in the town of Parsons. The college enrolls more than 2,000 students. The school offers a Management Information Systems Certificate program. This program requires 20 credit hours to complete. The required courses include introduction to programming and visual basic programming. Students will also study networking and database concepts and applications.
Newman University is located in the city of Wichita. The private four year college is affiliated with the Roman Catholic church. Newman awards the Bachelor of Science in Management Information Systems degree. This program requires a minimum of at least 61 credit hours. Students will study strategic management, business and professional writing, and concepts of computer hardware. The program also offers courses in database management systems, web design and development, and concepts of computer networks.
Ottawa University-Kansas City
Ottawa University is located in the city of Overland Park. Ottawa is a private Baptist university. The school offers a Bachelor of Arts in Management of Information Systems. This program prepares students for careers in IT, business intelligence, or systems analysis. Students in this program will take foundation courses in business mathematics, statistics, and ethics. Students will then complete major courses in organizational communication, database management, and systems analysis and design.
Southwestern College is located in the town of Winfield. The private Methodist school has an enrollment of almost 1,700. Students interested in information systems can enroll in the school's Bachelor of Science in Operations Management program. This degree program is offered online. Students will study operations management, project administration, and organizational quality management. The program also requires classes in managing group dynamics and finance for management.
University of Kansas
The main campus of the University of Kansas is located in Lawrence. KU offers around 200 programs of study, including an information systems program. All students entering the School of Business at KU must have passed classes in microeconomics, macroeconomics, accounting and information systems. The information systems major has courses teaching students about analyzing and designing systems, software, database systems and project management. Students must also complete a foreign language or an international studies requirement. Those who choose the latter option can select either a study abroad experience or an international business elective.
Wichita State University
Wichita State University has a 330-acre campus located in downtown Wichita. To accommodate students from across the state, WSU has set up several satellite campuses. WSU offers an undergraduate degree in information systems. The Bachelor of Business Administration in Management Information Systems is offered by the university's W. Frank Barton School of Business. Students in this program will complete a minimum of 124 credits. Major courses include fundamentals of programming, systems analysis and design, and database management systems.
