Community colleges in Connecticut offer courses in keyboarding. Most keyboarding courses are available as part of business office technology certificate programs. A few colleges have separate keyboarding courses available through continuing education options. Generally, the colleges offer two keyboarding courses: an introductory course followed by a course to help students hone their keyboarding skills. Keyboarding is taught using a computer, and courses often instruct students in word processing as well. The following list gives a brief overview of the 10 colleges' that have keyboarding courses, along with a table that gives the names of the courses and tuition information for each college.


Asnuntuck Community College

Asnuntuck Community College in Enfield has one keyboarding course in association with Ed2Go. Students learn to touch-type using the computer application Keyboarding Pro 5. Students also learn to use the symbol, numeric and alphabetic keys.

Capital Community College

Hartford-based Capital Community College offers classes in keyboarding through its Business and Technology Department programs. Three certificate programs and one associate's degree program (Computer Applications Specialist Certificate, Computer Application Specialist Accelerated Certificate, Health Claims Processing Certificate and Associate in Science in Computer Applications Specialist) include keyboarding courses. The introductory course teaches students to touch-type using the letter, number and symbol keys by using a word-processing program. It also focuses on increasing a student's keyboarding speed and accuracy. The second course helps students hone their keyboarding skills and produce various types of documents.

Gateway Community College

New Haven's Gateway Community College administers keyboarding training through its business office technology (BOT) courses. Programs with this training include Administrative Assistant Certificate, Customer Service Technology Certificate, Medical Administrative Assistant Certificate, Associate of Science in BOT - Administrative Assistant, Associate in Science in BOT - Administrative Assistant foreign language option, Associate in Science in BOT - Legal Administrative Assistant and Associate in Science in BOT - Medical Administrative Assistant. The Bookkeeping Certificate also includes a keyboarding course. Keyboarding courses teach students to touch-type, as well as how to use a computer word-processing application.

Housatonic Community College

Housatonic Community College, located in Bridgeport, offers an Associate in Science (AS) in BOT - Executive Assistant, AS in BOT - Word/Information Processing Specialist, Business - Administrative Support Assistant Certificate, Business - Word/Information Processor Certificate and Computer Information PC Applications Certificate. The college has a beginning keyboarding course that teaches students to touch-type using the proper techniques. The second course focuses on honing students' keyboarding skills and producing more complex documents using a word-processing program. Each course requires students to spend a lot of time in a computer lab. Students may meet the college's computer literacy requirement by completing the introductory keyboarding course.

Manchester Community College

Situated in Manchester, Manchester Community College's AS in BOT - Administrative Assistant, Legal; AS in BOT - Administrative Assistant, Medical; AS in BOT - Administrative Assistant, Office; BOT Certificate in Medical Insurance Specialist; BOT Certificate in Medical Transcription and BOT Certificate in Office Support Specialist programs include keyboarding courses as part of the programs' core requirements. The two keyboarding courses concentrate on developing students' accuracy and speed while keyboarding. Students also learn to create various types of documents. The medical transcription course focuses on honing students' keyboarding skills and can teach them the basics of machine transcription. This school also offers a basic keyboarding course that is not for students enrolled in a BOT program.

Middlesex Community College

Students can learn to keyboard by taking one of two continuing education courses at Middlesex Community College in Middletown. The course in computer fundamentals is for beginners and instructs students in basic techniques for keyboarding. The keyboarding course is taught online using the free computer application Keyboarding Pro 5. This course can be useful for beginners or help students improve their accuracy and speed.

Norwalk Community College

Norwalk Community College in Norwalk has one keyboarding course available. The keyboarding course is a required course in the AS in BOT program. Students cannot take a test to be exempted from the course. The keyboarding course is also part of the Business Software Certificate program. It's available in online, in-class or hybrid formats. Students learn to touch-type and improve on their speed and accuracy.

Quinebaug Valley Community College

Quinebaug Valley Community College in Danielson has two keyboarding courses: keyboarding - information processing I and keyboarding - information processing II. One or both of these courses can be found in the AS in BOT - Administrative Assistant, AS in Medical Assisting, BOT - Medical Office Skills Certificate, BOT - Medical Secretary Certificate, Microcomputer Software Applications Certificate, Microcomputer Software Fundamentals Certificate and Patient Care Technician Certificate programs. Some programs exempt students from taking the keyboarding courses if they can demonstrate acceptable keyboarding skills.

Three Rivers Community College

Three Rivers Community College, situated in Norwick, offers one keyboarding course in association with Ed2Go. The course is part of the continuing education division. The course uses the application FasType for Windows to teach students basic touch-typing skills.

Tunxis Community College

Tunxis Community College is located in Farmington. The curricula of the BOT - Office Applications Certificate, Microcomputer Processing Certificate, BOT Medical Transcription Certificate and AS in BOT programs include a keyboarding course. Students learn to touch-type and how to work with word-processing documents.
