University of Memphis

The Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law is currently housed in a 169,000-square-foot building, which includes a U.S. courtroom and law library. Students have the opportunity to gain experiential learning opportunities through in-house clinical programs and an externship program, and they have access to academic lawyers.

Juris Doctor

Part- and full-time programs are available, although only 10% of a class may be enrolled part-time. Prospective students should possess or be in the process of completing a bachelor's degree. The admissions office will consider the student's LSAT scores and GPA when determining acceptance.

Students are divided into small groups and receive guidance from upper-level law students. First-year students will concentrate on classes that cover fundamental aspects of law, such as civil procedure, property, torts, legal methods and constitutional law. Upper-level students can choose from an array of electives that allow them to focus on a specific area of the law, like income tax, corporate tax, family law and administrative law. Externship opportunities are available in judicial law, criminal justice, government practice, health law and educational law.

Juris Doctor/Master of Business Administration

Students who wish to study both law and business can enroll in a dual degree program that awards both a JD and an MBA in less time than it takes to complete each degree separately. Interested applicants will need to apply and be accepted to both programs and should complete applications for both at the same time. Students will complete one year of law school before beginning MBA courses. Courses cover subjects such as administrative law, antitrust, immigration law, non-profit organizations, global operations management and financial accounting.

Juris Doctor/Master of Arts in Political Science

The School of Law and the Department of Political Science offer a dual degree program; however, students are required to complete separate applications for each program. The Political Science Department allows 16 credits of law school courses in areas like constitutional law, criminal procedure and comparative law to apply to the Master of Arts degree; however, the remaining credits must be completed in political science subjects.

Juris Doctor/Master of Public Health

This dual degree program is designed to train students to use policy and law for the benefit of public health. In this program, both degrees may be earned in four years. The MPH portion consists of 42 credit hours, and students can take courses in areas including environmental law, disability law and practice, education and civil rights, legal ethics and national security law. A fast-track MPH program is also offered for professional lawyers.
