NYC Legal Secretary Programs

Legal secretary programs are not very common at schools in the NYC area, but there are two colleges and institutes that do provide programs for students who wish to pursue careers as legal secretaries.   • ASA College is located about three miles south of downtown NYC in the borough of Brooklyn. Legal secretary training is available through its executive legal assistant certificate program in the school's Division of Business.
  • Nassau Community College's degree and certificate programs in legal office technology prepare students for legal secretary careers. The college is based approximately 28 miles east of the downtown NYC area, in Long Island's Garden City.

ASA College

ASA College is a private, for-profit school accredited by the state of New York that awards 2-year associate degrees and professional certificates. In addition to its main campus in downtown Brooklyn, New York, it has a second location in Midtown Manhattan. ASA offers a 2-year Executive Legal Assistant certificate program for students who wish to pursue careers as legal secretaries or administrative assistants. Criminal justice studies at the 2-year degree level can also provide legal secretary courses.

Executive Legal Assistant Certificate

This 2-semester certificate program focuses on communication skills, organizational writing and fundamental legal concepts. It provides students the skills to assist lawyers in private practice or in-house counsel for organizations. This program covers business law, transcription and basic office administration. Students also take computer literacy courses.

Associate in Applied Science in Criminal Justice

Coursework in the Associate in Applied Science in Criminal Justice program conforms to the standards of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences. Earning this degree requires 61 credit hours of study. Students must take courses in English composition, speech and communication, criminology and law enforcement. Legal secretary courses discuss research methods. Courses in transcription, business law and administrative procedures are also included. An externship is also required to complete this degree.

Nassau Community College

Nassau Community College (NCC) is part of the State University of New York system. NCC offers a certificate and an Associate of Applied Science degree in legal office technology. Both programs emphasize civil litigation, probate law and real estate. Legal secretary courses at NCC cover litigation, document preparation and case management.

Certificate in Business Technology - Legal

Foundational coursework explores computer programs, office procedures, legal procedures, legal research and property rights. Students also learn about torts, family law, bankruptcy, debt collection and estates. The legal secretary courses include topics in preparing summonses, affidavits, bills and judgments.

Associate of Applied Science in Business Technology - Legal

The Associate of Applied Science in Business Technology - Legal program begins with an introduction to office procedures and computer technology. Coursework in this program is similar to certificate program but participants will also need to complete general education courses. Students learn about legal research, business law and legal office management.
