Long Beach School for Adults' Education Programs

The Long Beach School for Adults (LBSA) is part of the Long Beach Unified School District. LBSA offers High School Equivalency programs, English as a Second Language (ESL) courses, an animal care internship, and a Certified Nursing Assistant program. Courses are offered at the school's Willow Campus.

High School Equivalency Programs

LBSA offers High School Equivalency programs that will prepare adults for the High School Equivalency test. This test will assess how well adults know and understand five basic areas of study: math, writing, reading, social studies, and science. LBSA also offers a Home Study Program for those who cannot attend classes at the school's Willow Campus. This is a preparatory course for the High School Equivalency test; however, adults will take a pre-test before they're assigned coursework that they can take and complete at home, on their own time.

English as a Second Language Courses

ESL courses are offered at the Beginning Low, Beginning High, Intermediate Low, Intermediate High/Advanced levels. Separate courses cover conversation, grammar and pronunciation.

Animal Care Internship

LBSA offers animal lovers a chance for a career in this animal care with this internship program. The program is conducted in 16-week courses, taken twice a week.

Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Program

The CNA program meets Monday through Friday, from 7:30 AM 12:30 PM, for a period of nine weeks. Students can earn credit towards LVN/RN programs via the Certified Nursing Assistant program, which is offered as a first-come, first-serve course.

Long Beach City College's Adult Education Programs

Long Beach City College (LBCC) is a 2-year public institution that offers certificate programs and associate degrees in addition to its adult education services. The English as a Second Language (ESL) department offers adult courses. Also, the Multidisciplinary Success Center offers basic skills improvement programs for adults.

English as a Second Language Courses

ESL courses at LBCC cover reading, writing, speaking and listening. The courses focus on developing skills for both vocational and academic pursuits. Some of the course topics are conversation, composition and everyday English.

Basic Skills Improvement Courses

LBCC offers courses in basic skills to help students develop the foundational skills necessary for postsecondary education. Courses cover grammar, mathematics, reading and writing. The courses are not graded and are recommended for students with education skills below the 12th-grade level.

Cerritos College's Adult Education Programs

Cerritos College is another 2-year public college, located less than ten miles from Long Beach, that can grant associate degrees and certificates, along with the adult education classes provided. A wealth of courses are provided for adult students looking to learn the English language, as well as those who are planning to enter college and need prep classes for English at the college level.

GED Preparation Courses

These classes help students to prepare for their exam in order to obtain their high school equivalency. Courses focus on the subjects of mathematics, social studies, science, and language arts (writing and reading).

Citizenship Courses

This class readies immigrants for both the INS exam and interview, as well as the entire process of obtaining citizenship. Classes are offered in both English and Spanish. For a fee, students can get assistance with the N-400 Application for Naturalization on the computer.

Occupational Preparation Courses

This course is designed for students who want to strengthen their skills in order to enter the job market. The course introduces students to a large array of job proficiencies, and gives them the necessary tools they will need in order to successfully gain employment in the real world.
