New Hampshire requires that its practical nurses be licensed by the New Hampshire Board of Nursing. Individuals can meet this qualification by completing a practical nursing training program, which takes about one year to complete. Admission is competitive and will likely require the following:
- GED or high school diploma
- Placement test
- Reference letters
- Background check
The curriculum of a training program includes general education, core nursing classes and clinical work. Before beginning any clinical experience, students will need to take a drug test, show proof of medical liability insurance, have CPR certification, take a physical exam and submit immunization test results.
Harmony Health Care Institute, Inc.
Located in Merrimack, Harmony Health Care operates an LPN training program that is fully accredited by the New Hampshire Board of Nursing. The program prepares students for a successful career by providing them with a combination of theoretical knowledge and specific technical skills, as students spend more than 500 hours in the classroom instruction and over 300 hours completing a supervised practicum. Students also gain valuable real-world experience as they complete a 60-hour externship.
Salter School of Nursing & Allied Health
This Manchester-based school provides a highly-focused LPN training program that seeks to quickly and efficiently prepare students for nursing careers. Along with traditional classroom instruction and lab work, students in this program will earn experience through the completion of an internship, which allows students to spend time working in a real-world setting. Some of the course topics include pharmacology, maternal health and nutrition therapy.
A licensed practical nurse (LPN) must have completed a state-approved practical nurse education program, pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN) and undergo a criminal background check.
