Orlando, FL, Schools with LPN Programs

Students interested in becoming LPNs can choose from several schools in the Orlando area. This article looks at two schools that are no more than a half-hour from downtown Orlando and the programs they offer. All of these practical nursing programs prepare students to take the NCLEX-PN (National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses). The graduate must pass this test before he or she can obtain licensure and work in Florida as an LPN.

Herzing University - Winter Park

Herzing University offers healthcare programs in fields such as nurse practitioner studies, dental assisting, medical coding, health information systems, and practical nursing, among others. Students in the LPN program will gain hands-on skills through simulation labs and clinical experiences.

Practical Nursing Program

Herzing's practical nursing program can be completed in 12 months. Students learn about nursing fundamentals, adult health, psychology, and health and illness through the lifespan. The curriculum also focuses on ethics in nursing. In addition to being high school graduates at least 18 years old, applicants must take the TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills). They must also show proof of a past high school or college course in math, biology, or chemistry.

Osceola Technical College

The Osceola Technical College (oTECH), the only technical education center in Osceola County, provides training to prepare students for entry-level employment in their chosen fields. In addition to the practical nursing program, oTECH offers various other healthcare programs, such as nursing assistant, medical assistant, pharmacy technician, medical coder/biller and phlebotomy.

Practical Nursing Program

The full-time, 11-month practical nursing training consists of daytime classes and clinical experiences. The center also has a part-time program that includes evening classes and weekend clinical experiences; the part-time program takes around 18 months to complete. The curriculum for both programs consists of 1,350 hours of study. Program content examines family health concepts, body structure, mental health concepts and legal aspects of practice.

In addition to having adequate scores on the TABE and HESI (Health Education System, Inc.) tests, an applicant must complete an essay and submit to a physical examination and drug screening. He or she must also submit the following documentation: high school diploma, high school and college transcripts, three references, proof of accident insurance, current immunizations and a Florida driver's license. When all requirements are met, applicants participate in interviews and mandatory orientation sessions.
