Essential Information

In the state of Connecticut, five public schools offer Certificate in Practical Nursing (CPN) programs. These schools are part of the Connecticut Technical High School System and the curriculum is similar in each program. Courses generally cover basic nursing skills and most classrooms simulate a hospital setting. CPN programs combine clinical experience with classroom study in basic anatomy, physiology and first aid. Courses are offered Monday-Friday during the day.


A.I. Prince Technical High School

The technical school located in Hartford offers a practical nursing certificate program. Individuals must pass a criminal background check before participating in clinical experiences. College-level credits in developmental psychology, general psychology, and human biology may be accepted for transfer into the practical nursing certificate program.

Bullard-Havens Technical High School

The LPN program provided at Bullard-Havens Technical High School in Bridgeport fulfills practical nursing licensure academic requirements. The skills lab provides students with access to ten mannequins with beds and two Vitalsim mannequins, which are used for medical simulations. Criminal background checks are required before students participate in clinical experiences, which consist of care for patients in stable and less than critical condition.

Eli Whitney Technical High School

Eli Whitney Technical High School administers an LPN program in Hamden. The school has a 1,250-square foot laboratory that holds classrooms, a computer lab, and six hospital beds with mannequins, including a Vitalsim mannequin. Students applying to the program will need to submit a completed adult education application packet, a resume, and official transcripts, as well as pass an entrance test.

Norwich Technical High School

Located in Norwich, this technical high school provides a practical nursing certificate program, which is administered on a full-time basis during the day, Monday through Friday. The practical nursing laboratory houses a computer lab and eight hospital beds for clinical practice. The curriculum includes wellness and health issues, maternity and newborn nursing, nursing concepts, psychology, human biology and pharmacology.

W. F. Kaynor Technical High School

Waterbury is home to the W. F. Kaynor Technical High School. Students attending the practical nursing certificate program will have access to a clinical skills lab, which houses six beds with mannequins and one Vitalsim mannequin. Also, students may access nursing periodicals, reference books, and media materials at the school's professional library. Upon graduation, students are eligible to sit for the NCLEX-PN exam and earn certification as LPNs.

Career Information

Individuals who have completed CPN coursework and clinical experience are eligible to sit for the National Council Licensure Examination - Practical Nurse (NCLEX-PN). Upon successful completion of the NCLEX-PN, students may apply for licensed practical nurse (LPN) status. The Connecticut Technical High School System partners with Connecticut Community Colleges and practical nursing certificate program graduates may continue studies in a registered nursing (RN) degree program.
